Hi. Can someone help me out here?
I tried to install the beta test grid earlier today, and it gave me a message which said something like, "You already have secondlife installed would you like to install anyway? Yes/No"
I thought it odd as while I did have secondlife installed, I did *not* have second life beta installed. So I wondered why it would ask me if I wanted to overwrite a different second life version........I clicked yes, and gave the beta test grid permission to install over the secondlife which was already on my machine (Which was the SL Live grid). Big mistake.
Now I can not get the second life Live client back for the life of me.
I have been through 3 live help chats with Lindens and nothing has worked.
>>>Things I have tried 1. Uninstalling, reinstalling 2. Uninstalling, deleting cache, rebooting, reinstalling -deleted cache from both IE files as well as AppData>Secondlife>Cache 3. Reinstalled twice in a row so that it asked if I wanted to install over current installation. 4. Installed in a different folder than "program files>Secondlife"
Nothing has worked. And yes, I am downloading the correct (live) viewer from the Download page.
The most intriguing thing is on my SL sign in screen, under "Help>About Secondlife" the version numbers match up with that of the LIVE grid. But when I log in im sent to the beta test grid, and the log in screen is that of the test grid`s. It`s as if the beta and live grid made babies.
Any ideas?
My OS is windows vista.
This is very unusual!
Thanks

So... what happens when you try to run it? And how do you run it, exactly: from some shortcut (which might be pointed to never-never-land now), or directly from the executable in the install directory?
EDIT: Oh, now I understand what you said about ending up on the wrong grid. Still would like to know how you're running it... I suspect a command-line argument for the grid is somehow in a shortcut... but that wouldn't happen if you're not running from a shortcut.

From: Qie Niangao So... what happens when you try to run it? And how do you run it, exactly: from some shortcut (which might be pointed to never-never-land now), or directly from the executable in the install directory? That`s what it seems like. I have tried running it from both the new desktop shortcut, and program files. Some things I have noticed: 1. Both shortcuts (The one on my desktop and the one in program files) both say they were created today, the 22nd. Which is correct. 2. (however,) The SL app located in program files that the shortcuts are pointing to, says it was created on the 14th, several days ago. Must have been when I updated my viewer. If I deleted SL from my system numerous times, and did a clean re-install (or so I thought), why is it installing something from the 14th, when today is the 22nd? I think this has to do with the issue. But it is so odd it is bringing up a test grid..

So, if the properties of the shortcut show a "--grid Aditi" command line parameter, that would do it. (Agni is the normal grid, which you get by default.) But how Vista got stuck with an old shortcut command line would be a mystery... If there's no such command line parameter... have to figure out where Vista is getting the idea that it should still connect to the wrong place.
EDIT: Allegedly there's a file, "app_settings/cmd_line.xml" somewhere, that can hold those command lines... perhaps it didn't get overwritten in all the re-installing.

This is the target the shortcut points to: "C:\Program Files\SecondLife\SecondLife.exe" --channel "Second Life Release" Do you have any idea how I could purge any and every second life application file(s) from my computer? Thanks for your help!

Try this: At the login screen press: CTRL-SHIFT-G This will add a drop down menu next to the Login button. The menu contains a list of grids. Select Agni (the live grid) and try logging in that way. Also verify that you are using 1.21.6 version. The beta grid is Aditi. http://blog.secondlife.com/2008/05/25/reintroducing-the-preview-grid-aditi/

I suppose it'd be too obvious to call them "Live Grid" and "Beta Grid" for clarity, instead of all this Aditi, Agni business.

Well, if they were to rename Aditi, would it be Beta Grid or Preview Grid?

Re: grid names, there are 20+ grids with different names, but only 2 are accessible to us. Sure, they could use "Live" or "Main" and "Beta" but where would the fun be in that? I'm sure there is a method to the madness.

From: Ralektra Breda it's amazing that 2 live chat helpers couldn't help with that I know. And the sad thing is each chat took about 45 minutes. Next time, I will just come here. I have had more problems solved quickly in RA than I have had with Live Chat. The percentage of my live chat Q`s go unsolved.

My question would be...why didn't Linden Lab support catch this?

the live chat probably thought that the person tried that and it did not work, or misunderstood the situation
at first I thought that the OP meant that SL would not run, then when they said ty for the suggestion about choosing which grid, then I understood the situation
IF i had been the live help, I would have asked questions that would confirm to me, if it was a specific situation or something else.
Oh well

Oh well SL Live grid would not run. Whenever I tried to boot up the SL Live grid, it kept forcing me onto the beta test grid even though I had uninstalled that one. Live help knew exactly my issue and just kept saying it was weird and to clear cache, uninstall, reinstall, etc. The fix was simple. They should have told me how to bring up the drop down menu so I could switch between grids.

Last time I tried to use beta version things quit working I could get pass login screen. Removing the beta version corrected the problem for me. Usually in most cases clear cache, reinstall or relog works but not always, I am not sure why but I think it has to do with what went wrong.

and for the record, worded like that, it sounds like you had it set to go to the live grid but it kept putting you to the beta (and I too would not have thought about the drop down list, because your wording sounds like that option was already pointing to the right grid)

I didn`t even have a drop-down menu. I just had a "log on" button, never seen the drop down menu up until this poster told me to do the ctrl+shift+G thing, or whatever the combination was. One of the live chat helpers asked "What does it say on the drop down menu?" and i replied, "Drop down menu? There is no drop down menu" and she did not say anything
