I just read about Gnomi Chat in an SLE business forum thread and thought it would be of interest to others here.
http://www.gnomiverse.com/

"Chat with Second Life friends in the game at the same time you communicate with your friends in the outside world, even when you are not inside the Second Life game"

Available for Mac's and PC's. I have not tried it yet but apparantly you can chat into SL via a desktop application or via the web.

Has anyone tried this for chatting into SL yet?

Sounds interesting but I don't know if I find it useful personally but someone else might.

Just had a look at this - it requires that you register your SL name and password once you've downloaded the software. So it's not going to happen for me - on *this* account at least!

I suspect that handing over your password is in any case a breach of the ToS, although I stand to be enlightened by those more knowledgeable.

From the TOS:

"2.3 You need to use an account name in Second Life which is not misleading, offensive or infringing. You must select and keep secure your account password.

<IRRELEVANT PARAGRAPH SNIPPED>

At the time your Account is opened, you must select a password. You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your password and are responsible for any harm resulting from your disclosure, or authorizing the disclosure of, your password or from use by any person of your password to gain access to your Account or Account Name. At no time should you respond to an online request for a password other than in connection with the log-on process to the Service. Your disclosure of your password to any other person is entirely at your own risk. "

<END>

So its an individuals responsibility and not against the TOS reading the last line, however IMHO an individual would be mad almost to trust their SL password to an untested and unknown source, they are still in Beta, so how secure their system is no one really knows so its be careful i think :)

I suppose one could use an alt that doesn't own much with this client, it would still give you the ability to IM in world.

The Privacy Policy says in part

In order to access your third party accounts, you must enter your applicable user names and passwords into the Gnomi Chat Client. Passwords are only stored on our servers in an encrypted form utilizing both 1024-bit RSA key and MD5 hash technologies. Both the passwords themselves and the database in which they are stored are secured in this manner. Neither GnomiVerse employees nor our systems have access to your passwords in clear-text. GnomiVerse also offers the ability to access to our servers utilizing a secure SSL connection via the Gnomi Chat Client. You also have the option to not store your usernames and passwords in the Gnomi Chat Client, in which case they will not be stored on our servers.

But I don't know how much trust you can place in it. I'm a little uncomfortable that the "about us" link on the site doesn't tell you anything about them. So using an alt would probably be smart.

Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they are not out to get me.

That would be great.

I just logged in an alt using the website interface GnomiWeb and IM'd with my main SL avatar. Its a pretty nice interface, allowed me to view profiles, there was a button that would allow me to send money.

I could not find any way to initiate an IM with an avatar who was not already on my friends list, so contacting some individuals could be tough unless they IM me first.

This complicates the concept of maybe using an Alt so that you don't have to register the passworld for the main account. You have to establish the Alt and then get that alt onto all of your friends lists before you would be able to send them IMs. Given that it also appears that you do have to download some sort of client, that eliminates it as an option for work. I think I will go ahead and stick with Zonkster when I need to initiate an IM and I am not inworld.

My main problem with it was the message sent to the person you IM, without any indication it would do such, or even letting you know it had been sent. (person I IM'd received a message advertising i was using gnomichat and where they could go to use it too before my first message).

I'm not sure the ability to initiate IM's with other then friends isn't there, I just could not find it. Also this is in Beta so it may be coming.

You can do this all without downloading anything thru the GnomiWeb site interface.

When I tried it, it did not send the IM until I hit return.

The preceeding message it sends that you are using GnomiChat is a good thing I think, to let your recipient know you are not actually fully logged into SL.
