Hi, I know this comes up a lot but I have been having trouble getting everything in the environment to rez in. I have been to some crowded events lately, so lag is obviously an issue, but are there tricks to forcing the viewer to re-draw a particular un-rezzed/greyed thing? Or forcing a complete redraw. Even if I just sit and wait patiently, the grey blobs remain...
TPing in and out doesn't seem to help...
Increase texture memory? Decrease it?
Sculpty blobs are bumming me out...

Dunno about 'redraw' but if you hover your mouse over something for a few seconds, the viewer will increase the priority of that texture download. IE, it will download that texture faster. Also, you might want to try RC6, which fixes some bugs in this area. You can get that under Test Viewers at http://secondlife.com/support/downloads.php .

Sometimes, if Im in an area that allows it, I will res a box, sit on it, then edit and change my z-axis to somethign big, like 5000m. ... after popping to that height, edit it again to it's original value to return. I can't explain why it works, but it has on occasion.

Maybe this is in line with what Sindy said, but when I right click and choose edit on a object is seems to rez faster. Also if you see scultpies as balls then choosing edit will make them pop into place.

Try to get to viewer 1.20 if you can; texture rendering is generally faster than 1.21 ( see Jira VWR-8503 ) Viewer 1.22 RC6 is a partial fix for it, however i keep using 1.20. ( I don't know where to download 1.20, but maybe some know ). And/or you can experiment with this: Open Second Life's Preference ( Ctrl+p ) > Network: make that 1500. > Graphics: Tick Custom and then untick Basic shaders. Reduce Draw distance to 96-120 Lower the Mesh Details. Untick Avatar Imposter. Click on < Hardware Options > disable Anistropic Filters & disable VBO Set the Texture memory according to your graphics card memory. Press , < OK > and again < OK > On the moment that you klick an object it appears faster also yes. Sculpted however are one of the last, if not last, to get fully rezzed unfortunate. Right cklick on them and also they will rezz quicker in line with what the others said. Good luck Maybe other's have better tricks; this has worked great for me in combination with 1.20.

And what is your draw radius set to? Instead of trying to render beyond what you really want to see, why not bring it down? You can actually make it below 64 in Debug Settings, via RenderFarClip (I used to have it set to 50ish for double the FPS). In one very crowded place I used to go, I'd set it to 5 before going so the dance balls would rez where I was, then raise it afterward instead of waiting the ten minutes for them to all have been taken, LOL

From: Linda Brynner Network: make that 1500 That might cause lots of grey textures and things... I can't use a network above 500, you want to set it below whatever gives you packet loss. So keep lowering it until your packet loss goes away or things will just stay gray and you'll have chat lag and all those things. Oh and if you have room for a larger cache, at least that way you won't need to reload textures for places you return to frequently? Also, I wouldn't uncheck imposters, they are wonderful, and mean fewer textures to load too, I wish they hadn't changed the way they are provided as now I never see them, it was nicer when they were done by distance imo...

For me network 1500 speeds up a lot without any packet loss, however you can experiment with it as Crystal says indeed. Many of my friends use 1500 too, but it depends i think on your entire system and connection. Imposters on slows down on my system (but as said i use 1.20 again); you can experiment with it i guess. Totally agree on the larger Cache. I set it at 1000 Mb. I hope that all the above will help you at least to experiment things Doomsday

Thanks for all the tips, I am currently using 1.21.6. I upgraded to it over the weekend, along with my system (to OSX 10.5.6 -- the latest) because I was constantly getting stuck, lagging, especially if another avatar "crossed my path" -- so to speak. The overall performance is much improved except that textures seem to take longer to download. I can rez things at the busy SIM I was in earlier, I will try the bounce up and down trick to force the redraw. I will lower the draw distance too, This is probably what's causing the most trouble. I recently expanded it.

The trick I sue is a mix of the the tricks mentioned, reduce graphics setting to low or medium and hover the mouse over things you want to rez in, once enough is rezzed in to see what is what I increase the graphic settings back to high or ultra depending on how fast stuff is rezzing and just start walking, you will see things in the distance slowely starting to rez in while things closer are already rezzed.

Texture rendering is a known 1.21.6 pain in the ass ( Jira VWR-8503 ). It's not the downloading, it's in the 1.21.6 rendering code. LL is trying to fix it, however...
If you can go back to 1.20 i really would do it, 1.22 RC6 isn't much improvement sofar. Of course setting the draw distance not too high is a very important thing. But with use of 1.20... your SL will be blasting... sort of speak.
Btw upgrading to the latest computer spec's is a bit of a fairytale ( although minimum requirements are to be respected of course ). It doesn't speed up as it should.
Good luck.

Well, phooey, I put off upgrading to this client until this weekend, after reading some other info that seemed to make me think it would help. Not sure where to roll back... oh, hey, here's a dmg file of 1.20.15 still on my desktop. Maybe I should try that.
I think there was an issue with the 10.5.5 OS X that was causing the crazy lag - inability to be in the same place as another avi problem. I could work -- I am starting to do a lot of building -- alone for hours without problems, but as soon I'd try to be sociable - bamm, stuck in mud and unable to move until the other avi cleared out of view... weird.
I love my MacBook Pro but I gotta say, SL performance is much better on my hubby's PC, and it's even running Vista.

I'm finding RC 6 to load textures faster than any release for a good long while. Maybe it depends what stuff is around to be rezzed (sculpties, mix of texture sizes, who knows?). But I definitely agree that cutting draw distance to a minimum wins with any client. And I also completely agree that the current standard release viewer, 1.21.6, is the *worst* at texture loading, the absolute nadir in what was a steady decline since at least 1.18.
