hi. i have 65536 in a mainland sim and the agent limit is 40. current traffic is between 35-40 most of the time. im sure this is a long shot type of question, but does anyone else that owns 65536 on mainland have any luck in getting their agent limit increased a slight bit ? id prefer to keep a 65536 mainland over an estate for many reasons besides the expense factor. thanks.

No. The max agent limit is 40 for mainland. If you want more, you must get an estate.
ETA: One way to sort of get around this is to own land on two sims at the border. That way part of your traffic is in one area and part in another, if you need people at an event.

there are some sims with different limits, I think they were originally set out as test beds to see the effect... just like some sims have higher terraform limits.... those sims tend to maintain a higer price index and have less turn over... because the people that get them don't want to let go.

You may be seeing a case where the sim was full and other avatars logged back in. You do not get denied entry to a sim you logged out from when it is full and you log back in. So the agent limit can go higher than 40 in those cases.

If your mainland sim is a class 4 - which many are - raising the limit will definitely mess with your server performance. I would say grab an opensim but gathering is no longer legal on Opensim - but oddly massive gathering is still allowed up to 43 avatars at times on the mainland.

a) all mainland sims are class 5 for a long time now. b) Oh dear God, do not increase the avatar limit on mainland parcels. Maybe if they got rid of traffic first it would be OK but before then it would be a disaster with a bunchof sims cram jammed to the rafters with bots.
It might be nice if there was some kind of proportional distribution of avatar limits across parcel sizes but I absolutely cannot think of a reasonable way to implement it.

Not all of the mainland is class 5 now. I know I just read in the blog that they are upgrading much of the old mainland to go to class 5. I guess this is in an attempt to get the premium accounts they want.

I tried to find evidence of mainland being all class 5s. All I could get was this http://blog.secondlife.com/2008/10/20/new-city-area-discovered/#comment-620042Not entirely convincing I know but I'm pretty sure I was in that office hour and just don't happen to have a transcript to hand right now. They really need to make it easier to find office hour transcripts on the wiki.

Here's a third party transcript where he mentions that. http://maxxmonde.com/AdFarmerFreakout.html

I remember reading somewhere about all of mainland being upgraded to class 5. I think it was around when voice finally went live on the grid. It has been awhile.

Upgrade of my mainland land to Class 5
11-27-2008 14:28
When I bought my land on the mainland in Feb. 2008, it was on a class 4 sim. It was upgraded to a class 5 sometime in May or June 2008. I also noticed that all of the surrounding sims were also upgraded to class 5 sims about the same time. I live in the Sansara Continent and I think all of Sansara has been upgraded to class 5 sims.

Lindens increased Bear Mainland Sim avatar limit to 50 yesterday. So I guess it is possible. But, of course, the server was in bad shape the entire time and the Lindens restarted it at midnight. The problem with pushing a mainland sim to its limit is that you have no control over restarts.

Possibly obvious, but one of the problems with upping the avatar limit on a Mainland sim is its neighbors. Whereas the sim wanting more avatars may be able to handle them (low texture builds, little physics, few scripts, etc), the neighboring sims may be used very differently, so the arrival of yet more child-to-them agents could grind down performance dramatically in those sims. In contrast, on Estates with clustered sims, it's all within a single owner's control, so if they lag their neighbors, it's their own sims getting hurt.

Mainland sims with Infohubs get a limit over 40. This is because of the additional traffic that gets sent to Infohubs, reducing the overall number of avatars that can visit that sim.
