With the advent of windlight it may reveal more than I care to know about- that is Lindens are afraid of the dark.
Seams that everything gets washed out in the SL midday sun and conversely the nights are no longer the wonderful dark mysterious place they were....
A few dozen trips to orientation islands and help islands it's hard to not notice that the Lindens have removed night all together ... curious
Is it some vast study that shows griefers multiply as the sun goes down? or a vengeance over loosing the light tax? (yeah think at one time there was a tax on lighting)
Maybe just maybe it's a childhood fear of being in the dark.

It is harder to adjust your appearance or build when the lights are out. I'm always setting my World Settings to midday when I need decent light by which to work.

I only set myself to particular times of day for given situations (midday for building, midnight for ballroom dancing, and so forth). I love watching sunset and sunrise actually happen, and it's easy to miss when one is running around at midday all the time.

I create my own lighting so do not worry about if it is daytime, nighttime or somewhere in the middle besides... there is a good reason to be afraid of the dark Vashta Nerada

You are using different Windlight settings than I. (Mine remain default; I like to know how everyone else sees the world around me.) Wherever I go, when the sun goes down, everywhere is so dark that it's hard to see anything. Since Windlight also screwed with the effectiveness of local lights, many local lights that would once have lit up areas at night are now ineffective. I try to keep my viewer set to the defaults, because I'd like to know that I'm seeing the same world that everyone else is. But now, I often have to force midday environment when the SL sun goes down. Otherwise, the world is a dark mysterious (and not wonderful) place to me.

Amity, Nope default here too ... just there is no question mid day is washed out as night is a shadow of what it once was, *sigh* maybe we all chip in and get Lindens night lights so they can sleep. Rebecca- haha, would like to see some passing storms (left out polar shift)

I started after Windlight became standard so I've never seen what it looked like before. What viewer/modifications would I need to do so? I want to find out exactly why everyone whines so much lol.
I've never had much problem with how Windlight looks. It's not perfect, some small tweaks could improve it in places but the system overall is fine. And yes, I do go outside regularly, and I've been out at all times of day, including middle of the night quite often.
As for the Lindens being afraid of the dark issue, I came across several factors that can be involved. - Remember that SL currently has an eternal full moon. A full moon gives off a LOT of light. Next time there is one, go outside and walk around in open space (not under trees, artifical lights, etc.) and see for yourself. It still surprises me sometimes. - Local lights. If you have local light rendering on, turning them off makes some difference, especially in developed areas. - Textures and object with unrealistic settings can affect the feel of things. Fullbright on when it's not a light source, for example. Not much to be done about this one.
I'd suggest lobbying the Lindens for moon phases and appropriate lighting to match each one. Or a simple option to turn off the moon.

I've tried a non-Windlight viewer and I only see a few real differences. A nice hazy sky reminiscent of a polluted city for one. Landscaping is a little duller and flat. Details of textures, objects and avatars are reduced slightly but otherwise look very similar. The skin on my female avatar is just a freebie and it doesn't look much different between the viewers, btw. At night there are fewer stars than there should be and the moonlight magically refuses to reflect on the water despite there being a full moon lol. The lighting on land looks the same at night, Windlight or no.
For the night issues, I came across a couple factors involved: - Remember that SL currently has an eternally full moon. A full moon gives off a LOT of light. Next time there is one, go outside and walk around in open space (not under trees, artificial lights, etc.) and see for yourself. It still surprises me sometimes. - Local lights. If you have local light rendering on, turning them off makes some difference, especially in developed areas. This seems true of Windlight and non-Windlight when I tried it though.
I'd suggest lobbying the Lindens for moon phases and appropriate lighting to match each one. I'd personally like to see details of that sort anyway. Or a simple option to turn off the moon.

I live in a world of eternal midnight, Windlight looks great and atmospherical shaders give me all the eldritch atomsphere I require. I think the Lindens embraced the dark quite well personally VV

Dragger are you sure you're not wearing a facelight? Because for me it seems that the world is always in shadows. Nothing is ever given enough light to properly see things. I have to switch to a brighter windlight preset almost 95% of the time when I need to view something like a new dress or hair or a store vendor sign. I mean there's got to be something wrong with that.

When I bought my first, small beach plot on the mainland - it was sunny. Now, no matter how I fiddle with the windlight sliders, I can't get 'sunny'.
