As part of my search for role plays that myself, my partner and perhaps even our SL daughter can participate in I thought I would ask residents here if there were fantasy/medieval role plays they would recommend. I am looking for something Non-Gor, Non-Vampire, Non-Sex, Not combat driven, preferably something fairly open and newbie friendly as this will be my partners first role play and I do not know if she/can or will get as into it as I can. Though I say not combat driven, that does not mean non combat, only that it is not a role play driven on "WoW Grind", I am much more into role play for the characters persona then for hack and slash.

Currently ones we have found are Midsummer which may be a little too tame for me, and Helliwall (SP?) which I will likely look at some time today and see if it meets expectations.

Thanks in advance.

Well followed the Halliwell landmark and it seemed to have become a modern city role play not the fantasy based one I had originally read about. :|

I’ve been enjoying the elven community and would recommend you look into Elf Circle and their fantasy continent. The community follows a non technical theme (nothing after 1600s) so it has that medieval feel to it. Everyone has been extremely warm and friendly and everything ive seen thus far has been PG.
Teleport in to the ElvenGlen Market and ask a Greeter or Guardian for a notecard with the groups charter. I believe there is information at the castle too.

From what I've seen the few times I've been there, Avilion is very nebie friendly and pretty light-hearted about things. It's a fun place to RP a little if you want, and it's not sex/gor/vampire/combat, etc.

Problem with Avilon however is that they require all non-elf female apparently to wear dresses and my partner is not fond of that. :| Neither of us particularly want to be elves either.

Everwind is a rp sim we've visited a few times and may go back to. It is the closest thing I've found to Everquest (which I really enjoyed) ... but without the hack and slash.

When you tp in, follow the path into a cave, click on one of the statues/domes/whatever that gives a backpack and it will provide all needed info as well as a guest titler. There will also be a password provided to enter the sim itself.

There are several different races (elves being one) with free outfits provided to get started.

We found everyone we met very friendly and, as I said, we plan to make another visit to check it out again to perhaps join in the rp ourselves.

I'm a Guardian/Greeter at Avilion and that is something of a problem for some. I'd like to see them tweak the dress code a bit, but then on the other hand it might leave an opening for those that think they can wear anything while visiting and that would ruin the immersive RP atmosphere. Look at it this way, in medieval times all the women wore dresses. :)

This really is a fun and welcoming place to play. IM me in world if you have questions.

In medieval Europe, MOST women wore dresses but they were most certainly not ballgowns. But not every medieval woman was European. What about other cultures? Fantasy roleplaying games are full of warrior women. You'd never catch Xena Warrior Princess wearing a pink tafetta ballgown. I've been in Avilion a few times and I would not have stayed if I was female for this very reason. Why not allow women of other cultures and professions? They can easily be held to the same dresscodes as men.

Not exactly a SIM or anything structured at all but .... (shameless plug) I run a group, one people are free to come and go from as they wish, that specializes in the Eternal beings of role Play and in the Afterlife (Spirits are welcomed).

Again, nothing really structured at all, just something to allow a race tag. I've even added a tag or two at the request of members. sadly, the group is rather empty right now.

If you have an interest in any character type that may fit the bill of being Eternal (ageless, that sort of thing) feel free to look up Eternity's Embrace

I realize that. I was trying to say something encouraging to the OP because the sims *are* a very nice place to spend time and role play.

I believe I have been there and I do not disagree that it is nice there, however I am not the only one to decide on these things. ;) In the mean time we have found a LoTR RP area that we have settled on for now, though still interested in other opinions should it end up falling short on all our expectations after a while.

I don't think there is any easy answer for themed and RP sims. Obviously, for a completely immersive sim, one wants a dress code. But it gives an unfortunate feel of "thou shalt not" when one shows up. Freebies help, but SL folk are not a conformist lot by nature, and tend to resent being told what to do.

Some places, such as Caledon, don't have any enforced dress code, and most dress the part whilst they are there. But Caledon isn't a true RP sim, and therefore immersion isn't broken by someone in anachronistic clothing wandering through.

At the end of the day, each sim has to make its own decision about where to stand on the continuum of no restriction to restriction. I've been to Avillion a few times and found it beautiful. On the other hand, I was looking for an excuse to wear my late 15th c Burgundian gown :)
