"Waiting Region Handshake" (again) - workaround, anyone?

K my router cries when I walk into the room where it is, cringing under threat of another reboot. Yet rebooting is the only thing that stops me timing out and getting the same old error every time I log in.

Bandwidth is set to max. LL are "concerned" that the issue keeps happening.

Anyone found a workaround for this? I am sick and tired of being stuck in one place without freedom to map hop as I please.

Voice also often craps out/phases in and out.

Cherry are you using a wireless connection? From your computer to the router? If so, try a cable. My best guess though would be to check on your connection to your ISP. Possibly have them run a test to check your bandwidth and speed. I had some problems once because the cable provider was starting to run cables to many more houses in the area and somehow they made my cable signal weaker. They fixed it though but it really was something I couldn't have fixed myself.

*bump on Bree's wireless point :)*

You probably tried logging on to different sims directly already? (Otherwise: Edit / Preferences - General, check "Show Start Location"... then type in a sim name under your name/password before clicking connect... Hahne, Kara are two Linden water sims)

If it's not an SL problem, region handshake problems are often a firewall problem (home routers act as a natural firewall even if you don't have one on your puter) though :(.

If you do have one installed, make sure it's turned on and set to let SL through and try connecting your puter to the net directly (never try that without a firewall on your puter though, or with it turned off) to see if it makes a difference.

And/or try it with the one on your puter turned off (but plugged in to the router).

I have read that setting Bandwidth to the max isn't the best thing to do, mines set to 500, if that helps at all.

Aww thanks guys. But no dice.

Not wireless.

Have tried everything from 500 up. 500 ALWAYS bottles out.

I could write a book on the region hopping Kitty. Unless the last place I was at was home, then I can log into home and stay there. If the last place was home, I am out of luck.

If I wait a while, I can log into ANY region - but as soon as I leave that region (even to go home) I am timed out after 5 minutes.

Which leaves the router. The Xbox360 is in the DMZ ... tinkered with the router firewall and config ad nauseum - basically if the Xbox is ok SL is fubar, and vice versa or the both are out of action.

The only thing left is indeed the router - this is so intermittent though. Also, Andrew Linden has logged into my account and HE started having problems too.

Wits end :) Dunno why I am smiling, I have cornfield I could just make one and exile myself there I guess!!!

Eep .

To rule out that is indeed your account that's messed up somehow did you try (making) an alt?

I already posted my personal fix for this ...
EVERY TIME I get that error there has been a UDP scan on my reactive firewall from LL , & with it being a reactive firewall it automatically blocks.. I delete the block ( no good allowing that address its different every time) then try again and guaranteed I can log ... 100% of the time this works for me.

I know you are probably not using a reactive firewall like myself. But look into your router logs and see if you have any blocks on UDP recorded ...

It took me a couple of weeks to find out what was happening( For me anyway) & ever since I discovered the blocks Waiting for region handshake is a thing of the past .
Like I said your fix isnt going to be the same unless you use smoothwall or similar , But I think its a good place to start looking .

Thanks Bluesman ... can see a lot of head scratching tonight somehow :) It might well be something like that, going to see if I can get into the router info when i get home.

Kitty yes my poor beleagured "exists only to hold groups open" (and apparently much prettier) alt also has the same problem.

Thanks for following this up in world Kittykins - unfortunately I'd timed out.

Bluesman, got someone more au fait with that blasted router to look at this. Nope. Not a whit of difference as a result, but thanks for trying.

This has been intermittent for months now. I'm getting absolutely fed up to the teeth with it - here we have this beautiful world at our fingertips and I am a virtual prisoner in it. I am wondering why I have anything going tbh, I can only ever be in one place at a time.

For two pins I'd sell up and cash out. Will try yet again to get some practical advice from LL (nothing else is affected by this issue, only SL). Might yet be able to get to that Mentor Meeting tonight but only if I log off for half an hour first!!

GRR!
