Any modified clients for older computers?

I have a lot of friends who wanted to try Second Life but as its very well known those who have older hardware (especially old video cards) cannot startup the client. It's obvious that Linden will not do anything to make SL compatible with older hardware anytime soon nor anytime later, so I was wondering if there are any modified clients out there for older laptops and PCs. Any would do, even post-windlight clients, just something that people can run and get in-world with even if having to use minimum detail. So what's the best client one can get to access SL from older computers which don't work with the official version? Thanks.

Nicholaz Old School is pretty much your only reasonable choice.

I highly recommend trying the Old School Viewer as well. It is an excellent performer. If your machine can handle it you can go up a step to the BE/Bleeding Edge Viewer which I find is a bit smoother, and has the voice option, if you are interested in using it.

Which reminds me. I'm trying to help a friend into SL, and the only computer she has available is a laptop, with specs otherwise sufficent, but an ATI IGP 340 onboard graphics card.

She didn't succeed running any flavour of the client on it, not even the Nicholaz Old School -- everything results in pure grey textures, even though the interface renders correctly. Paradoxically, her clothing bakes on fine at the same time. Even more paradoxically, before she updated the drivers, SL would start up and show something -- but wouldn't run properly because of incessant swapping due to insufficient memory, which has since been corrected.

Has anyone, ever managed to get any graphical client run on a machine like that? Which one? While eventually she plans to get a real computer, the opportunity for this to happen isn't expected anytime soon.
