Could a Movie be dropped into the Game?

Suppose i want to watch a movie with a friend. I have been trying the youtube method - but dang! It only likes 10 minute videos, sometimes longer but it really hurts quality.

Is there a system that will allow me to drop my own movies ingame from my computer? What systems would then allow me to play them?

I am determined to make this happen. Any suggestions?

You'd first need to make sure that the video is in a format SL likes (anything the QuickTime player is happy with should work).

Then you'd need a (web)host to upload the file to so other people can get to it, although that's likely to result in a poor experience since SL tends to just restart the video when it catches up to what was downloaded so far so it's unlikely everyone will stay in sync.

The best solution would be to get a host that would let you stream QuickTime which would essentially be a live feed so everyone will stay sync'ed all the time.

(Of course if "movie" refers to an actual movie then the answer is "Don't even try" since you'd be distributing a copyrighted work online without permission. "Watching a movie with a friend in SL" does not compare with "Watching a movie with a friend on the couch in RL";)

CHeck out FreeView at Script-Foo - it's a free video viewer by CrystalShard Foo with lots of good features.

Of course you'll need your own land or have permission to use video on Group land. Here are a couple of video tutorials I made that explain how video works in SL:

It depends on what format they're in now (DVD, file on your puter in which case which kind .avi, .mpg, .mov, hosted on another site somewhere, etc).

If it's hosted online somewhere you just need the addie to it and if it'll play in the Quicktime player it'll likely play in SL (if it doesn't, you need to convert it into something that Quicktime likes).

In the end you'll still need a way of hosting or streaming the video into SL though. Unless you already have a host/streaming provider, or can use a public service for it somehow, it will cost money.

As for the GOR movie - it seems it is public domain. Google the name of your movie along with the term "public domain" and it will lead you to the information:)
I am using Moving Image Archive - they have 60,000 open source movies listed there. Of course - many old movies - but that's just what I want.

They seem to be hosting those movies because when you find the movie you want - you just push the play button and off it goes OR you can download it into your computer. I want a way to have a system like is used for MST3K, but don't want it to pull from youtube, but from a place like the Image Archive.

This way I wouldn't need to chop a movie into 10 parts.

You really don't need a web hosting service to watch movies from archive.org in sl. You can simply copy the URL for the movie you want to play and play it directly off of their web site. I helped someone else set this up before, if you need help go ahead and send me an IM in world, I should be on sometime after 5:30 tonight sl time.

As was mentioned before you will need to have the ability to change the stream for the land you are on. I also seem to remember that some of their formats work better than others.

I hate to cross post, but Goutlaw of Ore is fully public domain. Distribute freely. Hell, sell copies if you can.
