So the revised pricing is about recognising that change of use and the additional costs and value associated with it.

A lot of people are demanding a three tier system. I wonder how it would turn out. Obviously people will continue to "abuse" the lower cost sims and those of us using the higher performance open space sims could be at a severe disadvantage. I think from the perspective of my business this could be the absolute worst outcome. It would certainly be unethical to use a more restricted open space sim in the way I am but I won't possibly be able to compete with the scam artists who are reselling these more restricted sims. I suppose I can begrudgingly concede it might be the best way forwards for SL as a whole but I hope they put something in to protect the consumer or we're just going to be the same position all over again. _____________________

I suppose I can begrudgingly concede it might be the best way forwards for SL as a whole but I hope they put something in to protect the consumer or we're just going to be the same position all over again. The overloaded problem isn't just limited to openspaces, I know full sims that never make it above 0.6-0.7 time dilation. It's a surprise those serves don't catch on fire from the sim those sims are put through. Averaging out load - while ignoring any spikes - shouldn't be that hard for them to do, webshots have been doing it for years and years even with lowly shared hosting. For a sim - openspace or otherwise - that would mean that if it's low-key and gets moderate use you'll likely make do with the set basic plan. If on the other hand you want to turn your sim into a club or anything else that increases the load (be it due to things rezzed / running on the sim, or due to visiting avies) you'll be expected to pay a premium on top of your monthly tier. On the mainland that can be even be applied at the parcel level. If someone owns a 1/4 sim and they're using it for private, low-key uses they'll get by with the set plan. If someone decides to run a business with campers/models or free sex "paradise" on it that gets uneven use, they should be expected to pay for that extra use. Everyone seems fond of comparing SL to the web, it's time for LL to charge similarly as well. If you have a small little website it would be ridiculous to suggest that your monthly price is going to go up merely because someone else runs a highly popular site but just paying the same monthly amount you are. Everyone should just pay for the use they're personally responsible for creating rather than share the costs of a few excessives across everyone. And yes, that would hurt a lot of people as well, but at least it would hurt only the people who are currently unevely using more resources than they're paying for as well. If my openspace is "higher than normal, but moderate use" then fine, I pay $100/month for it. If yours is wildly abused then pay $150 or even $200/month for it depending on how bad it gets. |
