Use of DVi Monitor connection

I've dropped hints I would like to upgrade my 19" 4x3 analogue monitor to a w/s 22".
I see the cheapest monitors are described as analogue and have the usual connector.
Next up add a DVi connector and lead but still described analogue.

Qu. 1. Any difference in performance on one of these if dVi cable used?

Next monitor price band with a DVi says analogue and digital.

Qu. 2. Any difference betweeh analogue on these and digital DVi on these?

My graphic card is nVidia geforce 7500LE

Thanks
Love, June

I've got a monitor with both analog and DVI connections on the back. I have two computers hooked up to the monitor. Granted they're running different graphics cards but I do notice a big difference in analog and DVI. DVI is a lot better.

Make sure your graphics card supports DVI or rather it has a DVI output.

Just my 2 linden :)

Even the cheapest modern video cards have at least one DVI output. Unfortunately, some LCD monitors do not come with a DVI cable. I think this could be changing since most places stock more LCD monitors than CRT monitors.

I *think* (from far, far away :o) I remember reading that an analog DVI is simply the same old signal, just using a different connector.

I remember that (at the time) there were 4 different kinds of DVI plugs, and none (or few?) of them were compatible with each other so make sure what's on the end of your monitor cable will fit into what's on your video card. It all just gave me a headache and I stopped considering new goodies :p.

Hopefully someone more knowledgable will jump in and clear my hazy recollection up :).

Analog and DVI are very different. Analog is the digital information modulated on a carrier signal (very similar to an over the air broadcast freguency for your FM radio). There is a conversion process at the sending end and again at the recieving end (the computer end and the monitor end). Degradation is always present in a conversion......and in this case there are at least two. DVI doesn't convert the information........hence the better quality. If you can.......go for DVI. Soon analog will be obsolete.......even "outlawed" by the FCC in the United States. RF signal leakage is the main reason for the mandatory change to digital broadcast of TV channels begaining in 2009 for the United States. Computers using analog can and do leak signals too.........so I imagine the change for computers is not far behind the TV broadcast.

What I gather is there are 3 types of signal/connector.
Analogue as used for years
DVi useing analogue
Dvi useing digital

So I'm now taking it the first two, the analogues give same picture.
But the third DVI Digital is better.

You are correct. Plus analog will likely not exist in 5 years.

I have used LCDs on analogue and digital connections, picture is generally clearer on the digital DVI connection. I would recommend digital DVI just on overall principle. :)

Analog connections are also limited in the resolution and refresh rates they can support.
