Is there any clear information about mesh import?

I've seen this mentioned in a few places so far, and am wondering if anyone knows anything more about it.

- Will meshes collide?
- Will mesh animation hierarchies and animations be supported?
- Will scripts be able to alter meshes?
- Will UV maps be adjustable too?

/me wonders why LL is so quiet about it.

I guess it could be that they're concerned that talking more about it implies that they'll have it working eventually. Aside from that, it seems like it'd do more good than harm to talk a bit more about it.

All those in the sekret mesh lab are saying is "You really need to be learning 3D modeling and how to make meshes.".

So I am. And when I compare what the mesh in the modeler is capable of looking like compared to what a sculpt made from it looks like all I can say is mesh import is going to change everything if they get it working right. And with everyone racing to "upgrade" their content it will be a new boost to the economy.

Won't it mean, too, that every cheesy model in the 3d Warehouse will immediately get ported into SL?

They could at LEAST give us some clues. We have LightWave here, and would LOVE to use it for making SL content...IF it will be supported.

For a second there I thought you meant that artist who, briefly, left, then came back using a name like Lightwaves (and then left again, I think). And pictured him duct tapped in your closet. Ready to be rolled out when the mesh imports were perfected.

/me would pay good money to have Starax/Light Waves locked up in her closet. He'd get a nice little waicom with LAN-only access and a hole in the door which I could pass food in. Maybe some cusions and a microwave. Possible an AM Radio, too.

Wait, are you hinting/saying that Starax and AM Radio are the same person? Or just saying you might let Starax have an am radio. Or that you might also like to have AM Radio in a closet next to Starax?

That is actually a very probable concern. There's a TON of free or easily accessible mesh content out there for Poser and DAZ|Studio and other apps. The vast majority of it is not in any way licensed for resale as a mesh - it's only licensed for use in making rendered images. Just fine, for example to buy the "Millennium Dragon" and use it to make a 3D rendered still image, or even an animated Machinema. Completely illegal to import that mesh into SL and sell it as a beautiful statue of a dragon, or to carve it up and sell it as a dragon avatar.

Being able to create and import mesh objects is critical to the future path of SL development. But they need to take care to do it in a way that doesn't leave them wide open to lawsuits.
