OK guys, spring is well and truly here, and time for a spring-clean of our SL Inventories.
How about posting your inventory cleaning tips and tricks?
For example, I notice that there are an awful lot of duplicate items in my inventory due to objects being copiable. Is there an easy way to prune out all of these duplicates?

1) Make a subdirectory in your Calling Cards folder, and move the items out of the root into the sub directory. That will help cut down problems with teleports/sim crossings
2) Do the same for Landmarks
3) Using the Filters, find all your landmarks in the various folders, and move them to the Landmarks subfolder, and delete the duplicates
4) Do the same for notecards.

DisQ Hern has a great script that sorts duplcates of inventory items neatly into folders in your inventory for you to delete. Just carefully review the items to be sure there is nothing in there that is no copy you accidently had sorted. I lost some stuff my first time with the script doing that lol.
DisQ Hern, DisQ's gadgets and textures., Isle of DisQ (55, 14, 22)
Good luck!

#1 - Everything has a place; For me, this means making a folder for every designer i buy clothing from - no making outfit fodlers, i learned in 2003 how easily those get confused. All my "objects" are divided into sub directories in the objects folder "Furniture (by designer), kitchen stuff, vehicles, my creations, Others peoples creations, etc.. I even make a folder for my SL relationship where everything pertaining to it goes. You should definitely make sub-folders in your Texture and Photo's directory and file everything by date or person or type or something that fits the item.
#2 - Sundays (or any day for you) dedicate 30 minutes to filing everything you collected that week that you did not file away as it was received.
I have 37,000 inventory items after taking a 2 year hiatus and I feel my things are nicely filed away.
I do not use exterior storage schemes like dragging hundreds of items into prims or anything. Things over a year old go into a folder designated such like i have a folder for clothing purchased in 2005 and earlier. All the rest of my clothing goes into the clothing directory assigned to the proper sub-folder/designer (except shoes, shoes get their own directory, they go in a shoe directory listed by designer sub folders).
I also do the same with my animations folder, body parts folder, etc..etc..
I recall taking a screen shot and posting it once and someone said my inventory looked eerily organized or something to that effect.

*looks around * ummm i need a few days for something like cleaning mine out ..it's like taxes..i think i'll wait until the 15th hehehehe i really hate to do it because i go in thinking..ok Ceka this time we are gonna get rid of the things we never use.. then for some reason i end up going shopping afterwards and end up with more than i did before i cleaned..call me strange but it feels like i have more room and need to fill it again..i'm addicted to shopping what can i say Oh also a good tip for clothes is this..take a picture of the item you are buying..then put the picture into the folder that the outfit is in..this way if you are mixing and matching clothes you don't have to sit there waiting for things to res ..you see what you have in the picture .plus you can pop up more images and get some sexy outfits going for yourself *winks*

I really love the boxes from Thinc.....I have most of my inventory organized in that way... and now it stands at a mere 2500.... I stored most of my clothing and items that weren't used much. I had many many textures floating around and I've found that the texture organizer system from Opus to be absolutely invaluable for organizing them.
I also go through my inventory every day and do a little cleaning here and there. I agree with what another poster has already said, I've found that making 'outfit' folders just confuses things to no end......
Also, keep your 'object's' folder under control.....the worst thing is to have dozens of items all named 'object'......

From: Annabelle Babii I just sit back and let the asset server clean my inventory for me. It emptied 4 more folders for me yesterday. Too bad it was stuff I actually wanted to keep.

From: Pocket Pfeffer I really love the boxes from Thinc.....I have most of my inventory organized in that way... THiNC recommends you keep the inventory in those boxes to less than 100 items. That is hardly worth the effort if it seems if your inventory is in the tens of thousands. From the website: From: someone *****NOTE: There is no set maximum number of items that can be place in the organizer. The old limit used to be 255 but it seems to be infinity or I’ll just say a lot. (I have yet to get an official answer.) I have gotten over 6000+ items in an organizer before and still operating. I’ve been having a few customers that have been stuffing their organizers with 500+ items. While the organizer can easily handle this number it can be an absolute bear to retrieve all of them in a timely fashion. My recommendation is: KEEP THE NUMBER OF ITEMS LESS THAN 100 per box. Try it out and retrieve several items and see how it operates first then add more if you want. This This is just a friendly warning and will not be responsible for lost items even though I honestly never encountered this problem before.*****

I stored most of my clothing and items that weren't used much. i use these boxes too, but i dont see much difference in them than a normal box apart form the fact that it counts the items as u put them in, i dount use the arrows , i jsut edit the box contents to take things out, it is much quicker, so i took the arrow off to save prims as i store some on my land and jsut kept the script (its handy to know how many things are in the box)

i have two strategies i use... but these are pre-clean strategies and will only help you in the future.
1: i have a Junk To Sort folder. every new box, folder, class supplies, lucky chair goodie etc that i get, gets thrown in there. this greatly cuts down on my top-folder list length.
then, when im bored, or waiting for something, or whatever, i can pop open junk to sort and sort some stuff.
2: Backups to Notecards. this is really for builders, for storing and saving backups of your builds. the only downside to it is, you can ONLY put full-perm items into notecards. :/
so, here's what i do:
A: every time i start to build something, i take the first object and name it, and also set it full perms.
B: when im done with the object, but before i set perms to put it up for sale, i throw it in an archive notecard. i also periodically (um... ever 3 months or so?) go through my objects\work folders and throw all the works-in-progress and experiments into notecards.
C: drop a copy of the notecard into a storage prim on your land. i have a nautilus shell i use.
a guy named toady clued me in on this. (i forget his last name, sorry :/ ) toady had a 500-some-odd object castle build on his land; he periodically changes it. well... one day the asset server slam-dunked over half his inventory into the pit of eternal oblivion. he reported the incident, but went on his merry way. support was surprised he wasn't more, well... 'upset.' toady just went to his file cabinet, took out the notecards, and had all his stuff back.
2a: Boxing up Stuff. since notecards can only take full-perm items, its only good for freebies and stuff you build. so for other stuff, you can toss 'em in boxes.
hint: keep no-copy items in separate boxes. boxes with no-copy items are, of course, no-copy, so you can't keep one in your storage prim AND in your inventory. plus there's always the chance that you pull out your box with 500 copy/mod items and one no copy item, and it never rezzes. and then... all your 500 copy/mod items have poofed. that would hurt.
