HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

My home borders an unmade Linden highway. A couple of days ago a road appeared, which would be fine except that it's at the level of the higher land on the other side and so from my house it looks like the Great Wall of China!

On closer inspection it turns out the road is not official but has somehow been pushed onto protected land. It does not show in the prim count for the highway (0 owned by 'others') and it does not appear to be connected to anything on the owner's land. What's more the road now continues to the edge of the sim and all the way through the next sim and into the one beyond. I do not understand how it has been possible to put these road sections in place without them showing on prim count. Since my place was all but blocked off by the road I made a ramp up to it and linked it to an underground ball so that the ramp could be pushed onto the protected land while keeping the centre point on my land to avoid auto return - but it auto returned anyway.

I IM'd the highway builder, who was reasonble and said that he would lower the level of the road once it was all in place. But it just baffles me how anyone was able to build it as it makes a mockery of the idea of protected land.

I know - but I'm happy to have a road there and I don't want to fall out with the landowner across the other side over it. All I want is for it to be lowered so my place isn't walled off and I'd like to know how anyone managed to build it.

One possibility--though it would probably be obvious in the editor--would be if the road sections were actually dimpled / cut sections of megaprims, such that their centers were on the owner's property, but void space between the center and the "road."

It may also be kinda difficult for the builder to move the road down much, because presumably it has to be at least as high as the top of the sloping ground it's trying to cover. The Linden "road crew" can terraform a flat stretch that kinda splits the difference (if they're so inclined), but a private individual would be stuck with matching the highest point.

Take a look at it in edit mode, and see if it seems to be made of normal sized prims, or of overly-large megaprims.

The description sounds like he's done this with megaprims, rooted in the next sim over. If he has, there are many problems with this. Frist, any construct, of normal prims or otherwise, that has a root prim in the neighboring sim and extends into your sim will be phantom on your side. There is no way to avoid that. Second, allowing any megaprim to cross a sim border is a major risk for lag problems and other sim instabilities that will be caused by the megaprim. The fellow who *created* the first megaprims admits it is a very bad idea to allow them to cross a sim edge at all.

If it's normal prims, I suppose it is OK, as long as none of the neighbors complain. Though it's highly unlikely that he is authorized to build there at all.

If it is megaprims, I would be extremely cautious, would check for any signs of increased lag or other sim problems, and I would seriously consider asking for it to be removed.

Mega-prims are not needed.

This is very easy to do. All you have to do is link prims together, amking sure the ROOT PRIM of the linked object is on your land. This is where the system counts the prims as being "Centered".

This may not be immeadiately apparent if the builder is bright enough to make a micro-prim as the root-prim and texture it with the "totally clear" texture.

Very bad idea to do with neighbors, as this is an ARable offense under the CS (easement). LL tends to overlook minor things like this onto protected land. Dependant on the look and what the build is. Driveways up to the LL road usually are overlooked. Anything that blocks the road will be removed. This also depends on the Linden as (per the usual LL SOP) there is no official ruling on such builds.

My builds that have been returned in this mannor, are simply returned. No warning, etc. Though I have only used it for my driveway, and once to ceate a waterfall down the LL hillside to my property and a pond. Both have been returned (by the same Linden I will note), but the driveway has remained for months without issue.

I do advise against meg-prims in this use. The "shadow" from them can be quite distoring to SL physics (vehicles) and to cameras. If used, intense study should be done on the build to ensure no effect on the sim or Residents within.
