Would you bother to try selling just a few builds?

Not sure what I'm trying to ask here. I have a few builds completed, a couple of houses, a little furniture. I have also had some small success at animations. The furniture's pretty much what you see everywhere - nothing really cutting edge. The houses I think are a bit unusual.

So I wonder if you were at this stage, would you go to the bother of trying rent a little space to sell these items? I don't seem to have much focus, just a handful of different items. I might get bored if I concentrated on just houses for instance and I can't seem to build fast enough to get up an inventory. Would you just offer them as freebies? Thanks.

Not every shop is a "skin shop" or "furniture shop" - some are as ecclectic as their owners.

If you want to sell things, sell them.

Maybe start with posting your items on SL exchange. I would also suggest going to find small vendor spaces at places known for selling houses - like Home Depot.

I have a small shop (on a 512 parcel, rented) and I sell my photographs, sculptures, dresses, handbags, and house builds. (four house builds). They are all things I made for myself, which I thought were good enough to sell. Three of the house builds are on the parcel itself and the one next door, so they don't need rezzers. The house builds are the items which sell the most.

You never know until you try. I don't expect to make a living on SL selling my stuff, but it gives me enormous pleasure when I get the little notice that someone bought something.

Good luck!

Weston,

Pay as much money into SL as you are willing and able for fun. If having a store will be enjoyable to you, then just do it. If you are enjoying what you do, then you're more likely to actually get it paying for itself.

And as Lias mentioned, you can start out with SLX for free, so you have nothing to lose there.

I'm currently working on a small line of quality prefabs... I'll start out with maybe 5 prefabs and some lowprim high quality furniture in my shop, and thats it aside from my services as a builder and landscaper.

If you have something you want to sell, do it ;)

i rented out a store when i first started SL i love medieval things and was making scripted weapons, i sold three items for the whole month i had the store, a sword to a friend who i ended up just giving her the money back, as she was a friend. a 20L helm and a freebie shirt, i thought it was not worth it and just gave up

after making alot of at home items for my own place people would pop by and always tell me i should be selling the items, you know bridges, lights, whatever, after 2 days of being on SLX i got my first buy...woo! :) i'm actually pretty happy, i don't want to make money, just want to share my items with people...and hopefully get the L back i spent on those god dam sword scripts! haha

but deffinatly go to SLX it's free to sign up and very easy to use, just drop the item into the box in world and then write up a description, good luck :)

Nothing wrong with starting small. I only had about half a dozen products when I first opened.

depends, do you have things you'd rather do? freebies are fine, especially minor stuff, but I don't see harm in charging at least a little for them... but it's all a matter of taste

If you have only a few items, you can place them in a vendor, and Sell them at someone elses mall, or Superstore. I've seen vendors with only one or Two items for Sale. It's not how MANY items you have for sale as much as it is the Quality of what you are selling that matters.

[been having trouble navigating the web pages today, so I am late in responding]

Thanks for these great suggestions. SLX sounds like a good way to go. I didn't know it was that easy. And yes, I was hoping quality would be more welcomed than quantity. Whether using SLX or a small vendor space, maybe it's better to offer less. Less pictures=less lag. :-)

I still have some tweaking to do for a while.

The thing about selling homes is not many people would want to buy from a vendor without being able to walk through the home. So that means plenty of land to set up the homes.

i agree that you should post your items to SLX! most avatars know *someone* in SL who will let them place their box somewhere. make some nice graphics and be descriptive and see how it goes. and if you are a premium member, you should definitely have a 512 because there is no tier and it's worth the investment to have a place to show things off inworld.

i agree about people not buying buildings if they can't see them inworld, BUT if you price them low enough people will buy lotsa stuff without knowing what it *really* looks like...-shrug-

and oh yeah, don't forget about ONREZ!! like SLX except not as big (still growing?) and they don't take commissions from sales...

good luck

never thought of this

I have a house that I think is rather nice, on Slex, that until recently has not been rezzed in world for lack of prims and space (and just plain did not think of it being in world to help sales heh)

so yes very good suggestion here, think I might put a link in the slex ad to the house, can't hurt

to the OP, if you think it is worth it to try selling your stuff, then yes it is worth it

Weston, thank you for posting the question. I've been trying to create more items to put up for sale before opening a store. I never even though about SLX. Duh! I plan to have some things posted in the next couple of days. :)

Actually I am currently bothering to sell a few builds :-)

Just recently I created a nice house and a small collection of matching furniture, and since I was rather pleased with the results I put up the stuff on SLX. Yesterday I payed my rent to a few shops to get my brand known here and there, and when I think I have enough items to attract people, I will put up a frontpage ad on SLX (at 899 a week a nice way to get ppl to know you are actually selling something).

The thing to ask yourself is what's your goal with the building you do. Becoming a rising star in SL will take much effort (and money!) in advertising and renting shops, while just putting your stuff up for display doesnt have to cost a linden. To speak for myself, I aim somewhere in between, so that I can put most of my time in the building, which i like most :-) Spending a few linden to get people to notice you even exist, doesn't hurt though.

On the other hand, I have s small t-shirt shop around in an area that is still working on its traffic, and a few days ago i suddenly saw I got 2 sales from there. The few extra L$ I hardly noticed on my balance, but the immense good feeling that I got that someone actually wanted to pay for things I created cannot be payed with any amount! No clue what this has to do with the OP's question but I just wanted to share the good feeling ;)

Good luck!
