Okay, here is a REAL question to solve. How do you get those little faces in your threads? I think they are called "icons" I can do a smiley face but have never got the hang of a puzzled one or that one of "moon with sunglasses" (which I have NO idea what it means) :) - see a smiley.
PS. Please dont get technical with me.

Quote someone that used them and look at the quote?

If you quote a post by someone that used the smileys then you will see the code for the smiley in the message editor.

They're usually a word, bookended by full colons. I'll use semicolons in the examples below; change them to full colons to see the emoticons:

;eek; gives you

;cool; gives you

;rolleyes; gives you

;mad; gives you

;confused; gives you

The simpler emoticons use a colon followed by:

D for a cheesy grin

o for an embarrassed face

) for a smile

( for a sad

p for a tonguepoke

Perhaps Jig is using the basic editor?

If you change to the standard edit format the smilies are available to choose when you type your post. See User CP > edit options > scroll to the bottom and change to 'standard editor' from the dropdown list > save. And Bob's your uncle.

Otherwise, as Eli says, you'd need to check how the one you want is formatted in someone else's post (from a quote box) then copy that into yours.

C'mon you're a smart girl, it isn't that hard! ;)

Thanks, Eli :)

Aeslyn, a lot of people were having trouble with the standard editor, to the point that they couldn't reply to anything. Switching to the basic editor meant they could reply again. There's even a sticky post at the top of the forum about this.

Wow, thanks people. I really felt a bit silly asking this. And I think even Pep is taking notes.

I wish websites would quit pushing fancy editors. It's hard enough wrapping my ferret brain around the basic one.

Asking about them isn't silly at all.

Using them is silly.

Sorry Skell, it was the Enhanced Editor that caused all the problems. The Standard Editor is just fine and includes easy 'smilies' that the Basic one doesn't. If the sticky says you need the Basic Editor then it's wrong - as this post demonstrates. :p :D

Pep (is taking notice, but only because of the inaccuracy of some of the information being offered.)

I've often wondered this myself.

Prior to the below response, I would look up prior posting to see what how the emoticons were done. Example

Thank you Jig for your question that I was too embarrassed to ask. Kudos to Skell for a wonderful response. :D

I agree with you, and yet ....

In 10+ years of using forums (fora?) I've seen so many misunderstandings arising from an ambiguous tone that I've become fearful of posting without giving some indication of intended mood ...

Well that's also how I understood it.

From previous threads on the subject it looks as if people who couldn't post using the WYSIWYG editor -were- able to use both standard and basic. *shrug*
