Renaming unlinked prim conglomerations

This may belong in the building forums but it could relate to items purchased as well.

I thought I used to be able to select several unlinked prims and rename the whole mess before taking into my inventory, thus cutting down on the number of anonymous "objects" in my Objects folder. Am I misrembering this?

When in Edit and I select more than one object, the name field steadfastly refuses to change unless the objects are linked. It sure is a pain in the anatomy not being able to do this.

I suppose I could rename the group of objects once it's in inventory, assuming I recognise it. Does anyone know a way around this? Could I name one prim and select it last?

renaming that way will only name the last prim selected.

If you are misremembering this, it must be a mass hallucination. I've done this before. (Edit: I mean I've done the part about renaming a glob of stuff, not the mass hallucinating. Or maybe I've done that too and just don't remember!)

Whenever I forget to rename the mass of stuff, it automatically takes on the name of the last item selected.

Did you check to see if maybe one of the prims you selected is no modify? I don't think you can rename the blob if one of the items in it is no-mod.

Keep in mind too that it is Sunday. Weird things tend to happen on Sundays.

I haven't tried it that way...but you can select a bunch of prims, Take them into inventory as a coalesced object, and rename the object there.

The conglomeration takes the name of the last object selected.

I'll often rez a box, name it, and then select the whole lot, selecting the box last, to take into inventory. The box servers only to hold the name, and when I re-rez it all, I delete the box.

Of course, you can just rename one of the objects and just be sure to select that one last.

I believe that works only if all the objects, and all their contents, are mod.

That must be quite some time ago, then. It's been well over a year where that was not possible. Or, perhaps it's possible only when all selected objects are fully modifiable.

It was well over a year ago I put together a colloection and I remember vividly that it was not possible to change the name of the collection during selection. However, one of the items was no-mod, and this may have been a factor.

This would be a perfect way for me to save progressive versions of a build, because I never really know which prim will be selected last when I draw a selection box around the items. Heck, the naming box doesn't even have to be that close to the main structure, but floating in the air besde it. Great idea!

I always name one (prominent) prim of a set i want to take into inventory.
Then after drag select. I shift deselect that (selected) prim, and shift select it again.
This will make it the last selected prim and the coalesced set will get that name.

Also, when i do finally link up a set, it's usually that same prim which whill become root. (Same mechanism of selection)

I don't even think about it anymore nowadays, it's an automatic thing i do when selecting any set. ;)

There's another workaround for that, if the desired "root object" is easy to reach. Drag your box, then hold down shift key and click the root object once to deselect it, then once to reselect it.

However, the spare box is often easier to find, esp when doing a big glob of stuff. (That's a technical term.)

PS: Damanios beat me to it. :)
