Would this work in SL...?

Some of the newer Virtual Worlds have the functionality where when someone logs off, their space (land, buildings, etc) in the Virtual World is no longer seen by the other residents.
Looking at the possible advantages and disadvantages of this for SL:
Advantages 1. There would be no more complaints of 'all the empty sims' that occur frequently in this forum.
2. Similar to above - the SL would only consist of land that was either occupied, or at least the owner was logged in. (Of course, 'occupied' could be bots).
3. No unwanted guests would be rummaging around your property and stuff while you were offline.
4. The reduction of load on the servers must be immense (the impact on lag must not be underestimated here).
Disadvantages 1. Many nice builds would be unavailable to explore while the owner was not logged in (of course, there would still be plenty of others, but it could be the case that your favourites would be unavailable). But see next:
2. How rental sims could possibly work, if the land disappeared while the owner was not logged in (landlord bots, perhaps?. This could solve 1. above).
Any other points?

Rock It would for me break any illusions of an immersive and consistent world. I also think it would be quite confusing to know and communicate about what is actually there. Not a world I have much interest in personally, sorry.

I came to meet people, and it is looking more like a rerun of Survivors. I for one would love to see all these empty sims removed from the map, and at least have fewer sims, but with real people in there (if they can ban bots at the same time, even better, except for 'landlord' bots, as the OP suggested). 'Immersive', 'consistent', hahahahaha, sorry, those just cracked me up THAP

I am not a scripting genius, but my thought is, couldn't this (mostly) be scripted?
I have seen an object called a holodeck (I don't remember the exact item name). Basically, it stores different rooms, with all the texture and object information about the room. Press a button, your current room is packed up- walls, furniture, and all- and the new room is rezzed.
It seems that this item- or a similar scripted item- could acheive the same effect as the prposed feature. Push a button and rez your home or whatever when you log in, push a button and pack it up when you log out. And even though I don't know SL script, I would be that such a script could be altered by which it could work by detecting whether or not the owner is online and not requiring pushing a button at all.
There is one more disadvantage to the suggested feature anyway- how would it distinguish between the owner logging out intentionally, and unintentionally (by crash, for example). You have your friend at your house, your connection hiccups, and now suddenly your house disappears and leaves your friend in a wasteland.

Worst idea ever.
So, basically, if you own a shop, or any sim you want people to come to, you have to stay logged on 24/7?
Or you're just a user looking for something to do. Hey, there's something that looks like fun. Oh, sorry, the owner went to bed, it's offline.

Whatever you think of the current situation, sims just appearing and disappearing at random intervals would be even less immersive not more. Empty sims disappearing would mean most of the grid offline when I am in SL through the night as I live in the southern hemisphere and SL gets very, very empty compared to daytime US. That is going to lose more people than it solves problems.
