I want to put my skybox above 400m but I do not understand how I can do this.
Thanks for the help in advance!

Not sure if the problem is with *getting to* the skybox when placed there (something like a Flight Feather), or how to actually move it up there. What I generally do is build a platform on the ground of simple prims that fully covers just the parcel area to give me something to rez on while also defining the perimeter of the build. Then I link it into as few pieces as I can, and edit the Z coordinates of the linksets to go to the desired altitude. (Usually I've flown around to find a height relatively clear of "space debris".) Then fly up, open the editor, and rez the skybox on top of the platform while still in the editor, and adjust its position to fit nicely on the platform.
(If the skybox is in a nice Rez Faux package or the like, it's not necessary to be in the editor in advance, but if it's just a coalesced bunch of prims, they'll all be selected and can be moved together if the editor is open when it's rezzed.)

I usually open the build menu, then rez and adjust the parcel positioning (x,y) on the ground. When it's where I want it, I sit on the edge of the building and enter the desired height (z) coordinate via the object tab.

I usually make a template by joining together a few prims to fit the size of the plot (or just bigger than the skybox, if you know what I mean), place it where I want on the land making sure it doesn't overlap onto the neighbours, then send that up to the required height by editing the position co-ordinates. Then I rez the box on top of the template and adjust as necessary. Then I can be sure it's in the right spot only over my land. Especially usefull if it's a tight fit. When all's in the right place I delete the template.

Newbie question...in trying to adjust my Z Coordinate for my new skybox to take it up to 500m I found that I could not directly overtype the Z field, but could adjust it in small increments with the up arrow key on the input box. I ended up using my flight feather to fly up a lttle and drag the house up with the blue arrow, fly up, drag, etc. Why would this be? I was not standing on the object when I tried to raise it up. Would that make a difference? I was able to overtype the Z field a few days ago (before I accidently deleted the house and left all my furniture and teleport pad up there at 500m . Thanks in advance for any advice. Jackie.

The 30 second guide to placing your skybox at 3000m (or wherever): 1) Rez a prim cube at ground level 2) Sit on it 3) Edit the prim cube on which you are sitting and overtype the Z value with 3000 or whatever height you want 4) Go into mouselook (hit 'm') and back out again (hit Esc) to restore the display 5) Edit the prim cube and resize it to 10x10x.1 6) Stand up. You are now standing on a convenient sky platform 7) Rez your skybox As soon as you stand on top or inside the skybox, delete the impromptu sky platform As for height ... I would always place skyboxes above 1000m. The old 768m limit is long gone and there is no benefit in staying low. Modern viewers can work with four digit heights just fine.

I still don't know if my problem of directly entering the Z coordinate is because I was standing off the rez'd skybox (an Arch House) at ground level (to make sure it fit the property, which is really small). I put mine at 500m because I really don't need that much privacy (it has a security orb set to protect out to 15m) and it's cute to have an in-sim freebie TP pad on the ground by my little park bench that links with the one on the patio at Z = 500m, and they don't have much range. Just makes visiting seem a little more personal (also have a Welcome mat . I give out the location of the ground pad and let visitors IM me from there (although they can obviously go straight up, of course) so I can turn off security or give them access, then they TP up. I'll try staying on the object when I try it again tonight. Thanks, Jackie.

There is a distinct advantage to living in a flying machine. Rezz it at ground zero, so to speak, and fly straight up [700m in my case]. Platforms for other purposes are easy to build then as well. And, when you want, you can go flying and easily return to the start coordinates [which one has remembered to write down.]

I noticed that objects tend to de-select themselves if you are not next to them. Just fly up to the object and try again. As for limited distance, I can give you a simple teleporter I wrote myself that supports unlimited distance. Ping me in-world if you are interested. The old (pre-mono) teleporters are sometimes too limited.

Paola - many thanks. I do recall now that I was standing in the skybox the first time I flew it up because I didn't have any flight enhancement things and would not be able to get up to it. If I succeed in getting the house back up where it left all of its furniture when it disappeared I will be pestering you for that tp! Cheers, Jackie

Problem Resolved...

Oh Mighty Forum Advisors, Sources of All Wisdom, Wise Beyond Comprehension: I, Newbie SJackB Northman (Jackie) lie here staked to the ground spread naked before you and beg that when you flog the living skin from my undeserving bones you may somehow show mercy on this humiliated one.
Took advantage of a few quiet minutes and went home for an early lunch. Tried the suggestions from everyone and nothing worked. Deleted the myriad copies of the BSD Simple Arch house from Inventory and got a new virgin copy from XstreetSL. Rezzed it on my tiny patch of land and NADA, nothing, squat. In a brilliant flash of insight I looked at the keyboard and noticed that the Num Lock light was not illuminated. Hmmm, says I to my self. Turned on Num Lock and typed "500" in the Z field using the numeric pad, hit enter and watched my skybox blast off into the sky. What a dope I am! Sorry to waste all your time on this...I did pick up a few pointers, though.
I am really pretty good with technology. Really. Honest. Wouldn't kid you...really. Jackie. PS Thanks again for the help.

You didn't waste anyone's time. This is a common question, one I asked myself my first week here. Your confusion is totally understandable and the advice given here is useful for other folks with the same question. That's the beauty of public forums.
Glad you got it worked out!

Welcome to the forums, Jackie. We don't bite. Neither do we flay (except for Love Hastings, maybe, and only when the fit takes her). Oh, and Brenda might fire a missile up your south end from her Huey. And Damien is the Prince of Darkness, so don't accept an invitation to his house for movies and popcorn. But other than that, we're just pussycats. Really. /me shoves her .45 automatic a little further behind her hip and twitches her blouse to cover the grip. Seriously, you sound like a good candidate for The Forum Cartel. Search for it in Groups in world, and don't forget the "The". See you at the Hangout.

I might check that out when I start to figure out what's going on around me (actually, I'm stalling for time while I myself get some practice in with my new L$0 .45 caliber semi-auto, just in case it's a rough place to visit) that I bought last week! A girl can't be too careful! Where did you say we were going, and just exactly why am I in this handbasket? Best, Jackie

The old (pre-mono) teleporters are sometimes too limited. Just checked my home email from my phone and saw the message about the TP. Thank you so much. Gives me an excuse to start learning LSL. I've programmed in Fortran, COBOL, PL/I, C, C++, Java and about half a dozen machine languages so hopefully I won't end up TP'ing my sorry butt into the middle of the planet! Best, Jackie.

The thing will work without programming, don't worry. It's just that you may stare at the code to see how it's done. With your programming experience you won't have a problem with LSL. PS: Happy to find another one who still knows Fortran and COBOL!

i just drop 5 prims ..one at each corner and one in the middle the sit on the middle prim..then type 1 in the size box z axis for 10,000..line them to the corner edges and shoot them to 2000meters.. i drop my box on the middle prim centering it to the y and x axis and then delete the middle prim leaving the other 4 for later so i know where my border is to keep me from going into someone elses land with future prims or mega prims i may drop..

Best, Jackie There's a nice little shooting range at "Dangerous Geisha". And I've never had to so much as draw at the Hangout. Far too nice a crowd.
