Today while exploring, I came across a Linden. Checking her profile, I saw that she belonged to several groups, including one called Oldbie Conspiracy. Doing a few quick searches, I found that most of the members of that group did indeed have rez dates prior to 2004. It got me to thinking about prominent groups.

I know everyone here has heard of the Forum Cartel. Electric Sheep members seem to be everywhere. What other groups do you consider to be noteworthy, either for providing accurate and useful information to its members, or for being well-established and long-lasting?

Lol Jannae, who were you?

And why beware them? What's an oldbie going to do here, make new folks feel stupid? ooooo scary!

An SL oldbie would have started in 2003, and thus could quite feasibly be 28 years old in RL, and a little behind in RL accomplishments due to spending time gaming. A noob posting their first question about prim hair today could be a 55 year-old executive with a six-figure salary who's already raised their family and is used to getting their way.

I know which one I'd be more wary of!

But, to return to the thread topic, I'd love to hear about interesting groups folks are members of. Mine are boring, except for the SL Humanists, who have good discussions and sometimes expeditions on Sundays. Not that I ever go, of course. Kinda prefer getting together with RL folks on Sundays.

What they said! Or you could be talking to a Linden in their spare time and you'd never know ...

I do know someone in the Feted Inner Core group ...

However, it does stand to reason, you VERY rarely see old accounts. Hell, on my account I get "wow you're the oldest person I have ever met!" and I am only 2 years old. It must really hack them off getting comments like that - hence there's an awful lot of people older than they seem.

I love the comment about rich people. Wish I was one of them, without being 55 or an executive :)

I'm not posting my interesting groups! Some are on my profile ... some are VERY much on a need to know basis.

Trouble with the old 'statusy' groups, is that they are:

a) dead cause everyone's playing Eve and Warcraft

b) useless cause you already KNOW all these people, as an oldbie

c) lame because they invited people wanting statusy oldbie groups.

...beyond that, you've got some land ownership groups like maybe Tyrell or something, which actually confer land rights in worthwhile places. Groups like that are about as cool as oldbies groups get.

There *is* something cool about being an oldbie. But it's not something to be admired about in others - it's a personal thing.

If you are looking for street cred, join some groups active doing cool things right now. There are people who signed in for the first time today, that will rock our world a lot more than a bunch of dusty oldbies.

My 2005 Des account is still a babe in the woods, relatively speaking. Even 2004 isn't very oldbie - the world changed a lot less from 2004-2008 than it did in any six months of 2003... the one possible exception being the user explosion from 1-10 million.

I'm not sure about prominent or popular groups. I never make the connection between one person's groups and another's. Neither am I sure about useful groups really.
However, my fave group atm is Fashion Consolidated. It severely reduces the amount of groups I need to join and leaves space for other ones.
Basically Fashcon is a group where designers can join as well as customers. The designers will send out a notice when they release something new. There are a LOT of notices and no group chat, but there are lots of freebies and I really like the group. A couple of days ago was the Fashcon anniversary and it was a freebie day, I got so many cool things it is unbeleiveable lol.
I think this group would come under the 'useful information to its members' group lol. Plus it is a huge group. Loads of people in it.
I tend to join live music groups of performers I enjoy too.

I've always been fascinated by a group named something like "Thinkers". I have no idea what it is, but it has an intriguing Mensa-cum-thumbsucker cachet about it. :p (<-- Not a Thinker.)

By the way, does naming groups violate forum guidelines?

I know there is that "sexiest avatars of SL" group, or some name like that. Invite only. No, I've never been invited.

Well, there are 3 groups that I know of called (in order of size):
Things to Do
Things to do, Places to See!
SL Things to Do

I've always been curious as to whether these are really neat to belong to, but since I have way too much to do whenever I'm logged in I've never joined any of them. But I should, since I don't do enough of the cool things in SL.

In my end of the world, Second Life Children is the long time established group. Nearly every kid is an SLC member. Some days I feel it should be someting like "Kids' Union, Local 123" from how widespread it is in kid-dom.

I'd love to be, though, one of Bub's models. I doubt I'd be what they'd want. ;-)

This is exactly what I had in mind. The "Land Answers" group also would fit the the description. I like the suggestions presented so far.

I guess I should have been more clear; Which groups do you find the most informative and/or filled with experienced residents?

Oldbie Conspiracy is SL's original griefer group.

Any Linden involved in that group should probably be fired.

If anyone deserves it, you do.

I go by the old Groucho Marx adage, paraphrased: I wouldn't want to be a member of any group that would want me as a member.

In all seriousness, I REALLY wouldn't want to be a member of any old statusy groups. Reminds me of some stuffy country club where you have to wear a tie to dinner and discuss your investment portfolio over $15.00 martinis. Bleah. Arrogant, elitist and brutally boring. I'd rather pin my feet to a plywood prim with ice picks.

Actually it is not a griefer group of any sort, although some of the members were guilty of engaging in anti-social behavior from time to time. The membership includes a cross section of SL pioneers.

Most of these accounts never log in, but some of the owners are still quite active via alts.

I am a member of Thinkers.

They meet every tuesday, and discuss a given topic.

At its best, it is the highlight of my SL week.

At its worst, It should be renamed "Typists", as people descend into reactively typing, the first stupid thing that comes into their head.

The two mainstays of Thinkers, are Gwyneth Llewelyn, and Extropia DaSilva, who are 2 of the smartest most penetrating thinkers I have ever met in either world.

The Cartel is not now nor has it ever been a noteworthy group. Unless you can be noteworthy by being so unnoteworthy.

I am a member of "The Sexiest People in SL". I was told their search was now complete since I joined.

I'm rather fond of my own group, "Coco, Coco and Co."

It consists of me and my alts, Cocoanut Cookie and Strawbearry Shortbread.

I was a member of an art group at first that is very active and prominent, but I soon grew weary of the constant blue pop-ups advertising someone's opening every ten minutes or so. You know - "Sydney2135 Staplepuller* is a real life artist exhibiting her work in SL for the first time, etc etc." A real life artist? Gee -- as opposed to all those who are only artists in Second Life, I guess. Though I did enjoy the art I saw very much, this went on all day every day, and the group IM chat seemed a little silly and tedious to me.

Then I've joined other groups that are literary genre or music oriented and get - nothing at all. No notices, no meetings, nothing.

With one exception I know of, there doesn't seem to be happy medium.

The exception is the Forum Cartel. I get one or two notices when I first log in for the evening and that's all. Then the IM group chat, though often silly, somehow manages to just be pleasant company while I'm trying to build. It doesn't seem intrusive. Maybe it's because I see familiar names there.

So other than the Forum Cartel, I've never really understood the purpose of belonging to a group.

(*Apologies to anyone named Paperclip. This was not aimed at you or anyone else specifically. It was just a random SL sounding name.)

I am fake artist I only do art digitally or with crayons or whatever writing and drawing equipment I can find.:)
I have tried to join several groups....When Dagon Grimm was new in 2003 I tried to join some groups focus on the Art of making prim penis which was big then back then it seemed bit all hard to follow.
Groups actually back then seem more like web page/forums.
I don't really like how the groups are set up now except for land related purposes now.
I personally tend to avoid groups and belong to very few.

For an old group of some significance, currently active, New Citizens Inc. fits the bill.

Hee hee, Jill Linden is in Oldbie Conspiracy. She used to stop by the old Ahern-Morris boardwalk in the old days. There's a 119 people in Oldbie.

There used to be two groups with names like "Oldtimers". One got formed as a result of some problem with the other. I don't see either group listed, but since groups can hide their names, that doesn't mean anything.

Scripters of Second Life is an old group that's still going strong. Builders of Second Life doesn't have as much chat as Scripters does, but it does ok.

An old group is Vin Fiz. Someone investigating old groups might want to look in the archived group forums.

Another interesting old group is Leftists, Liberals and Lunatics.

Ouranos is an old group of note.

The University of Second Life, founded by Hank Ramos, is a group of note. USL had a big campus and did a great job of educating oldtimers in the mysterious ways of Second Life.

The Gigas Group.

There's a group, not in the SL sense, but in the normal sense of the term, called "The Lindens" at lindenlab.tribe.net, that was created on 11-19-03, about a month before I joined.

Ben, Catherine, Colin, Cory, Dan, Doug, Jim, Philip, Phoenix, Richard, Robin, and Ryan, all presumably with last names of Linden.

I suppose they should kick Cory out now! :p

Founded the same day was a similar group for SL Resident http://secondlife.tribe.net/

The page for secondlife.tribe.net still doesn't work right. One might think the moderator Phoenix Linden could have found time to fix it in the over 4 years it's been not working right. Think again.
