Orientation Help!

I just joined SL so I hope this isn't a known problem, but in the Orientation Tutorial I can't complete the 'Communicate' puzzle piece as well as the third star for 'Communicate. Also I can't find the task for the third star in the 'Move" tutorial. Any help or general tips would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Swipes and welcome to SL! I had problems finding that 3rd star in 'Move' as well. I finally just gave up and went to the center spot and touched the central thingy to get my "pass" off the island. Note that you don't really have to have a "pass." If you push the "search" button down at the bottom of your screen, and go to the Places tab, you can type in anything you want, then click "teleport" to get off the island. Try searching on "garden." The SL Botanical Gardens or the Lost Garden of Apollo are two great places to practice moving and flying.

I haven't been to OI recently enough to advise you on the specifics of the tutorials, but I can say they're not actually that helpful in the grand scheme of things. Since you've completed the majority of the tasks, I'd probably just suggest you detach the HUD and find the sign to teleport to Help Island.

The lindens are working on it and should have it fixed as soon as ginko pays up on the bonds

Thanks for all the good info everyone. I think i'm going to just get off the island. One last question, what am I going to miss by not completing everything on Orientation Island?

Not much. I mean, last time I was there, they still weren't explaining how to open a box, ffs!

Can we make a Forum Cartel Orientation Area? Possibly in a skybox above the land?

We talked about doing a forum-sponsored newbie area around the Hangout, and decided not to, at least at the time. Never say never ... but I personally don't think we're quite ready to bite that off yet.

However, there is Public Help Island, which actually has real people to help mentor through the basics. I'm not inworld, Swipes, so can't TP you there. But if you hit the Search button on the bottom of your screen, and then select the Places tab, and type in Public Help, you should see it on the list. (Folks, please feel free to correct me if wrong about it coming up in search!)

Didn't you have an idea for a Random Acts Of Grid Kindness welcome point? Whatever happened with that?

I love that Orientation Island is borked and LL is dragging their feet on it. No wonder numbers are stagnant if people are stuck on that damn island. (I know all about being stuck on an island).

It will be a very interesting place to go for some laughs when the CSI promos really hit.

Quite by accident I found a way to escape from Orientation Island even if you haven't completed all the stages.

Just click on the bulletin board at the centre circle, which will teleport you to Help Island. Once you are on Help Island, the rest of the grid is open to you and you can teleport wherever you please.

Welcome to SL, Swipes. You already have good advice and I agree with Oryx about Apollo and the SL Botanical Gardens. Exploring there will help you learn how to get around, but it will spoil you - those are two of the most beautiful builds you'll find anywhere.

Just a heads up - SL has a steep learning curve - steeper than a lot of old-timers realize - and it will be realy frustrating until you get used to it. I came so close to quitting in frustration during the first couple weeks that I still don't know how I made it. It has been worth every second of the frustration, though, so stick with it, and feel free to IM me if you get stuck on something. The people here on this forum are a great resource and you're welcome to join in.

I decided to let that sit until I became a little wiser. The amount of coordination and effort required would be much greater than that for the Hangout project. I particularly wanted to wait until I understand LLs attitudes and intentions toward the forums better. I think that working with those of us who are interested in exploring new moderation for the forums (with the view toward getting a new General forum) is a good venue for that learning.

That said, if someone else wants to take the idea and run with it, feel free! Be aware tho, that many of the folks who are most enthused and would be most helpful, are already involved in some sort of mentoring group (not the LL official ones, but others).
