New Neighbors = Excessive Lag

i know lag is crappy everywhere right now (or maybe it's just me), but i think my current outrageous sim lag might be directly related to my new neighbors. ever since the day they bought the land and started building (all on same day) the lag in my sim has quadrupled. it takes me forever to move a prim from point A to point B. it's ridiculous. can't even walk or fly.

all they have there is two houses, that i can see. how can i find out what scripts (or amounts of) they are running to see if they are the cause of the new lag issues.

the week before another portion of land sold, and they are building some wacky thing in the sky, and it could be them also.

everyone has stupid ban lines so it's hard to get around my sim anymore, or find out what's being built.

secondary.... WHY are some people so rude? a speculative and open ended rant, but dang.

Ban lines are one thing (although I dislikes them as <bliep>;)... but not giving your direct neighbors pass-through is another.

When a neighbor of mine throws up banlines, I send them a friendly IM about it. Most of the times I got a positive reaction back (once or twice the banlines were taking down, other times me and my group got passthrough).
The one time I got a "Oh fuck, leave me alone" (this is the censored version of that IM) I have banned this person and her group from my land.... and blocked more then 50% of her ways out. It is giving and taking....

I think a lot of people simply miss the concept of an online world. They just don't see a connection with community. Thankfully I've not met many of these. 99.9% of all I meet, even the nooborn (like it?), have been polite and reasonable.
On lag, there have been some odd things of late. I got logged out of two different sims within minutes last night and some places that are rarely laggy suddenly are! Lots of avies staying grey for longer. I'm grinning and bearing it ... at least no maintenance downtime today!!!!!

Come on AWM .. tell me to clear my cache .. I love the way you say it ;)

I feel your pain ... we just moved to a new location in new land. When we arrived and set up, the sim was smokingly fast. The next day, the neighbors bought their parcel next to us and immediately built their huge mall, each store with their scripted vendors. They put their strip club in a skybox while working on building a new strip club on the ground. It drags down the entire region. It drags down the entire region. Hundreds of scripted vendors, a strip club, camping chairs ... **CALGON, TAKE ME AWAY**

They are nice folks, and certainly within their right to SL commerce ... but it just makes it hard for us to do anything. So for now, we grin and bear it.

Then over the weekend, the parcel behind us sold and somebody set up a dance club. it looks like everything in their parcel is poorly scripted freebies, and all their objects are of 3-year-ago freebie quality. *sigh*

I think a large aspect of starting up a venture in SL such as a shop or club or any other kind of communal/commercial structure is finding the combination of features that will allow the overall image to be projected but allow reasonable refresh rates. It's not even in the club owners interests to have everything slowed to a crawl so ultimately and with possible cooperation between neighbours a happy medium should be attainable.

Those club owners who lag everything down regardless due to spite or ignorance inevitably drive their own customers away anyway and therefore have short histories.

New land always has gone through this cycle of development and mostly gets filtered down to a gentler and more long term existence.

Patience, courtesy .. oh, and cross your fingers :)

It might not be your direct neighbours. Putting up simple buildngs shouldn't cause lag.

We suddenly found ourselves unable to build, move, rezz or anything at one point and the sim was virtually empty. We found out that a club had opened on another sim, miles away, but that we were sharing the server with that sim. Every time the club had a busy night, we basically had to give up doing anything or go somewhere else.

Luckily, the club - like most clubs - didn't last long.

Enter your sim and if it is known to this system, it may show what other sim(s) share the server your sim is on. Then, inworld, look at the other sim. Mostly information.

ok, i went and checked, and it says i share with 0. none.

i receieved an IM that a visitor did not experience lag, but i still had lag and so did my friend.

i thot i read somewhere that there is a way to check the stats while inworld. can someone humor me and tell me which initial button to press to explore those numbers?

View> Beacons> Scripted Objects. It shows all their (and your) scripted objects. You can't tell what scripts are running, or how much lag they generate.

Ctrl-Shift-1 will also tell you your own personal bandwidth/packet loss, etc. I'd double check that it's not your connection slowing down as opposed to the sim itself. The only reason I mention this is because I had to call my cable company and nag them to come fix my signal because it mysteriously degraded to the point where I could barely move. Once they fixed it, all was lightning fast again. Just a thought.

I guess this is just the site design course I took in school talking but its my opinion that with such a huge growth in SL, many of which end up being week long business ventures, there should be sections of the mainland that are commercial, while others are residential.

But then again, we all know LL wont hear of something that would maybe bring some order, they would much rather have ad farms and plywood boxes posing as clubs. Hey, I can dream cant i?

Hit ctrl shift 1 as pointed out above. If you do not see anything below "simulator" there then click on it to expand it. Then click on time (ms) to expand that one. This article will explain what you see:

Sounds like a way to drive prices back up again. Meddling in the market to make artificial shortages will do that.
