Why do people spend a fair amount of time setting up a nice home, with trees, landscaping etc. and then spoil it all by putting up a huge megaprim backdrop with an out-of scale photo of an RL landsscape? I've never seem one of these screens that works well.

I agree with you there. Personally I think they're just as much, if not MORE of an eyesore than banlines.

My neighbor has done that, and I do prefer seeing that rather than the bloody mess that is the next region he borders to.
It used to border to our parcel aswell (ground was not in use before I moved in), until I started landscaping it and making it look decent. |

Yup, agreed...they are pretty silly. The only time I've seen these work is for skybox
areas that aim for a certain ambiance.....they can be handy, tho still not that great. Which reminds me.....if you guys haven't yet tried the in-world game (it's featured in showcases, and yes, morbid fascination gets the better of me and I do check them out from time to time) The Chaos effect....it's way cool! I spent an hour or so the other night going thru it and I still have to go back to find the rest of the 'artifacts'. It's sort of on a par with a game like Myst....where you have to solve clues in each room in order to get to the next....the interaction is well done and it's pretty entertaining if you're bored and looking for something to do~! ![]() _____________________

I've seen a few that work well. Even a couple that made me do a double take...was that SL, or a backdrop?
What bugs me is the people who don't make it transparent from the outside (unless the build it's hiding is ugly, and then fine!) And the people who don't make it phantom. BONK. _____________________

I played the game a while ago, and it's definitely a fun way to kill an hour or so. But, just so folks know, it's called the Kaaos Effect. http://www.orange-island.com/?p=1505 |

I don't mind them if they aren't on my property, are transparent on my side and are phantom.
Some people do it to hide ugly builds. _____________________

I know this is a pet hate of yours but sometimes we have no choice.
![]() Mine is transparent at the back and phantom. It was also nice of my good neighbor to cut access to the open sea for me and everybody else on an otherwise picturesque estuary. ![]() _____________________

Generally speaking I agree - especially if only one side is textured or it isn't textured at all, just plywood...But that said, I would do the same probably if the view were of something really horrible or tacky. (Flashing pink lights maybe) If a view changes badly, it can be a letdown. So I can understand it.
But if someone really doesn't want to see ANYthing outside their home I suggest a skybox instead...and just go to ground level when they feel like seeing the world. ![]() Some people do employ miles of those blurry flat photos though and I don't get it either really. shrugs JMO _____________________

I saw a nice one the other day - on a square beach plot with water on one side and builds on the other three sides, the parcel owner had taken a pretty snapshot of the SL water and set it up on a megaprim wall around the landward sides of the property. It obviously doesn't fool you if you walk up to it or look close, but if you are just lounging among the buildings in the middle of the property (as I was) it just looks like water off in the distance and is quite effective.

So maybe snapshots of SL read better than putting RL snapshots on the prims? Interesting!

Clarissa, I do think that's part of why it worked better in the place I saw it - because it was an SL snapshot, it just blended seamlessly into the background of the scene. A RL beach or water photo would have stuck out for looking jarringly different from the rest of the scenery.

I can understand people putting these megascreens up if they want to hide something ugly on neighbouring land, but a lot of people seem to put them up because they think it's the thing to do. Even if they are transparent on one side, neighbours on the other side can still see them.

Yeh, we had some people in the next sim over not only put megascreens up hiding our Linden trees and bayou, but covered the ground with flat grass-textured prims... on a flat green southern-continent sim.

That's true too. Just as with low-altitude sky builds, overlapping prims with clashing texures, forgotten 16m lots with money pyramids on, empty dance clubs made out of bright-coloured blank textured panels etc., SL wouldn't be the same without megaprim screens!!

My lot is bordered on one side by a megaprim screen. It's printed with trees on my side and though it doesn't look like SL scenery, it's not offensive either. In fact, my land feels kind of tucked away and private next to it. (I had a blank brick wall next to me on the old land - a mall on the other side - and I liked that, too.)
Something I hadn't noticed until I tried walking into one corner of my lot is that the neighbors have banlines up - somehow or other, with the tree screen they are practically invisible. (The banlines, not the neighbors, though I've never actually seen anyone on the land...) _____________________

Just yesterday some neighbors were doing odd things with their parcel. They placed megas on the land to place their houses on (probably raising the houses 3m or so). I figured they were aiming for a better view of the water behind our land. But, they then proceeded to erect mega-prim privacy screens around the parcel. That one had me scratching my head.
I was trying hard to contain my irritation with the help another neighbor and dear friend when the sun went down. That's when we realized the privacy screen textures were full-bright. sigh. |

It's all part of the adventure of the mainland. Fact is no matter how much you complain if they are not impeding movement, and the prim is entirely on thier own land about the only way you can get those prims removed involves the megas creating problems on the sim....they set them physical for example(or whatever problem the lindens occasionally have with megas).
I know years ago I ran a small park with mahjong and various cuddle and dance balls in a scenic setting. the family homes boardered it on 2 sides. THEN one day the neighbor put up a 100 M tall BLACK wall of a mall on the other 2 sides. THis was in the days BEFORE megas. Yeah I put up a 10 M tall Stone fence on those 2 sides. It was the only way to salvage a little of the ambiance of the park. |
