Texture Perms in new creations?

Maybe a dumb question.....but maybe not. :o

Generally speaking, if you're creating something with your own unique textures.....and the object itself is NOT full perms when you distribute it......is there any need to change the permissions of the textures being used in the object?

Or....by the same token.....should the textures BE full perms....or does it matter?? I'm assuming if you don't actually put a copy of the texture into the object content, it wont matter anyway.....but it seemed a question worth asking.

I honestly cannot remember how the perms work for textures. I know that textures you upload and use in products don't affect the perms on those products. I don't recall what happens if you don't have full perms on certain textures. If you don't get an answer here the best way to check things out is to give your products to an alt and see what the permissions turn out to be.

Texture perms are not a factor at all for items you create with your own textures.

The only thing you have to watch for is No transfer Textures - They will install themselfes inside the prim - one copy for each side. If you are the creator of the texture you can apply them unrestricted regardless of their perms in your inventory.

If you are not the creator then they have to be at least copy and transfer for you to use them properly.

Depends on what the item is. If you're talking about a clothing layer item, it's very benificial to your customers to lock permissions on the texture itself and allow modify on the item. That way your customers won't see the texture box at all when they go to modify it (so there's no risk of cheap screenshot copies of the texture), but they can still change things like sleeve length, tint, etc..
Skins are a bit different, so allowing modify when the slider adjustments wont show anyway (unless its a semi-transparent skin) is kind of pointless IMO, but locking the perms on the 3 textures will keep the textures from appearing in the edit window if the skin was mod.
On some prim items I make, I do include the texture (no trans) in the folder so if the customer messes up on the texture tab they can always reapply it.
I think in general, locking down the texture perms is a good idea if you're going to allow modify (which every item I make is).

Are you asking so that no one can lift the texture out of the item and use it without your permission? Is that what you mean?

I don't know how to prevent someone doing that, but some here have said how in the past.

exactly how would one "lock the texture" so it doesn't show during mod?

(for clothing I mean) I create clothes and do not know of a way to do this.
(unless I am totally misunderstanding your comments)

By setting no mod/no copy/no transfer on the texture file BEFORE you use it in the clothing layer. That way, when someone edits the finished item they only see the color tint box and the adjustment sliders, NOT the box where you can change the texture.. it's missing, not there, blank space, gone.
Texture perms on clothing items act differently than on prim items... they dont affect the "parent" items perms, but they CAN make the texture pick box hidden if the original texture used is no mod. As creator you'll see it there reguardless, but another resident will not see the texture box, only the tint box.

hmmm ok so how do you choose no mod no transfer and no copy on a texture (I have never tried) do textures act differently than other item for perms?

(I am gonna have to try this and send to an alt, as I have never heard of this before, thanks for the tip)

The clothing or skin is just a text file with the texture ID's in it--it's impossible that any modification to the texture item would affect the clothing or skin item, as the only permissions mask associated with that item is its own. Objects can be thought of similarly, except perhaps with the exception mentioned above by VonGklugelstein.

You could think of it like this really:
1. items never reference other items, only assets
2. permissions are a property of an item, not an asset

ok.. I am not sure what you are doing to textures or clothing to have them not show the textures when folks mod them... but here is my result.

First of all, can not set no copy, no mod, no transfer, it will either be copy OR transfer, can not disable both (on texture)

So... send a copy/mod clothing item to an alt that has no rights to my items, and guess what... the clothing texture still showed up when in appearance mode to mod it.

What client are you using to access SL, or what hack are you using to disable all permissions on texture?

Or what the heck am I missing?

(send me a clothing item, mod/copy (so I can not thus transfer it on) so I can see for myself the no texture in the clothing mod window.)

Thanks

I know with sculpt textures one can make those so they are totally transparent in the edit window

but clothing, that is a new one for me
and setting textures to no permissions at all, another new one.

Ok Rha, I tried testing it the way it used to work and it didn't (to my suprise, and only after I had sent you a bad example). Also appologies for the confusion about saying no mod/no copy/no transfer.. think I was more interested in passing along a cool trick than paying attention to what I was saying
Not sure if some of the viewer changes since 1.18 might be keeping it from working like it used to, but I DID sit down and RE-figure it out...

1. Upload your texture using an alt.
2. Send it to your main with full perms (owner & creator become different).
3. With your main, Set No Modify/No copy on the texture.
4. Create a NEW clothing item using that texture (edit appearance).
5. When done, take it off and set it to No Copy.
6. Done.

Now, when you transfer that item to a 3rd party or different alt, they'll be able to edit it, change the sliders, change the tint, but the box for the texture will be missing.
I also did send you a 2nd FIXED example that I know works (cross-tested it over 3 alts).
Hope that helps :)

EDIT: The item can't be mod/copy like you asked for. Somehow this is a function (or DISfunction) of setting no copy on the clothing item. I tried it with mod/copy/no trans and it didn't work. I guess, theoretically no mod/no copy/trans would work but you'd never be able to tell if you can't mod it to see... dunno.

wow you are complicating this just a bit.

The bottom line is you cannot protect your texture fully with the current perm system.

Right now the most restrictive perm to an end user is No Mod No copy Transfer with the key being no copy.

No copy items and textures can only be used once! Once you give it away you will lose it completely or not be able to use it more than once if you keep it.

If you transfer something with a texure simply applied to the object - there is no way for the creator to control what happens to the texture on that item. The only thing someone can do is what the prim perms allow them to do. If the prim is no mod then nothing can be changed, if it is no copy, it again can only be used once. If someone replaces the texture it is gone for ever.

Edit: Unless they use a script to lift the texture .. which requires mod enabled

Oy LOL

Ok.....I think I got what I needed out of this. The textures are mine....I'm making skins.

But....another puzzling element has revealed itself. I'm going to be selling on xstreet (at first, gotta work out if I'll use other venders or put a shop on my island)

I had asked in group chat about this, but I got no love LOL. Setting permissions, as far as I ever knew, was limited to full persm.......or copy/mod no transfer......or copy/trans no mod.......or mod/trans....no copy. Or, transfer, no copy/no mod.

To my knowledge one cannot select copy only, or it will default to copy/transfer. But....while I was applying permissions to my new skin......I checked copy......and left mod and transfer unchecked. They remain unchecked when I go back into properties and look. Am to understand now that we CAN make an item copy only?

I'm totally perplexed......I don't want to throw these on xstreet and have them copy/transfer LMAO that would be a bad goof. :p But again....when I check off copy....nothing else greys out.....the other boxes remain unchecked and bolded....and it doesn't seem to default to copy/transfer the way it used to.

Ah
Neat trick, never thought of using an alt to be the creator of the textures

being that it is no copy though, that stops me from using it, as I plan to eventually have all my stuff as mod/copy.

Still neat trick

(I suppose if someone wants to take the time to screenshot the edit window, then try to turn that into something usable, good luck LOL)

permissions on system things (clothes, skin hairbase, eyes and shoebase) are as follows...

mod/transfer, mod/copy, copy only, transfer only, or full perm (have to have at least copy OR transfer)

Yeah, there doesn't seem to be a great need for mod/trans perms on clothing, copy is much more useful. I never did try mod/no copy/no trans with this.

(Actually, if they click the texture box to change the texture, the preview that comes up is a bit larger and you'd be suprised how well a screenshotted texture can look.. same goes for the sculpty preview window. Another reason this trick is pretty nice to have.).
