They want to get the most out of their license.

I don't know what the version was but the 2009 copyright suggests that it's a recent version. Whatever it is, it's full of 404s that, if you keep on refreshing, you get the pages. It's become almost unusable.

It's also full of non-images.

3.0.5 is circa 2005
there is no update.

Wow it's all changing, I'm getting strange views showing which threads I've posted in today and "Last post" links showing up.

However like Nina says, aren't they on something like 3.8 now?

From where I am it looks like someone is trying to kill it.

I just discovered that link too, because the image wasn't showing, so I could see the alt text where the image should be. I'm pretty sure the image was always there - just that I hadn't realised what it does before.

Ah good point Phil, maybe there's an envelope image missing, I never bothered finding out what the different types of envelopes meant.

Nope it was and still is 3.0.5 as stated in Nina's post. There is no upgrade underway but they are evidently doing some work on or migrating the forum server. We have had slowdowns and 404 errors 3 or 4 times starting in August or September last year(although not as bad as this afternoon). Several of us were excited the first time because we though it indicated that they really were performing an upgrade.

Ah, the good ol' days! (And they wonder why we find it difficult to work up that excitement when they mention the New Improved Forums software coming Real Soon Now.)

Just keep hitting F5 until the page you're trying to get to appears. It usually takes between 1 and 5 tries for me.

It's a caching / load balancer issue.

Some of the webservers requests are being routed to are borked where the forum software is concerned. They need to take them out of the load balancer rotation whilst they work on them so these errors don't show up to us.

The footer may say version 3.0.5, but I think they imported the layout and content into a new version, so it will incorrectly call itself 3.0.5, even though it is a later version (latest is 3.8.3).

Unless you are clicking the "New Posts" button, in which case you'll get a "Can't search more than once every XX seconds" message *grrrr*

Or actually trying to post, in which case you can end up with duplicate posts from hitting reloading too many times (and then have the fun of trying to delete posts against the 404s).

Is LL deliberately trying to silence residents (banning people from posting to jira and "archiving" jira entries they don't like; a new blog with an editor so horrible to use in any browser that it discourages people to post comments, and not a forum which generates more 404s than content)?

oh well, not a major loss if they actually do archive them, would be a sad loss if they did not, there is a lot of info out there, especially in the building, scripting and texturing subforums.
