It's been an *interesting* day, SL-wise, so I thought I'd share my experience and see if anyone else has any interesting SL Moments that they'd like to share as well.

Much as I enjoy sailing in Second Life, sometimes it can be a tad aggravating. Today I have been trying to sail the newest addition to my little digital fleet - a Trudeau Tradewind brigantine - around the Passages course, a nice long racing course specially designed for this class of ship that should take around ninety minutes or so to complete, supposedly. Three times I have attempted this course, and all three times I have failed to complete it.

During the first attempt, a flying dog came over to investigate then sat on my ship uninvited, which caused it to grind to a halt. Said dog then decided to strike up a conversation and nattered on inanely until I pointedly told him that I wasn't going to be talking any more because I was trying to sail around a timed course. So he flew away, only to appear a few minutes later in a stupid oversized speedboat and proceeded to zip back and forth across my path until I got cranky and asked him to GET OUT OF MY WAY KTHXBYE. So I resumed the course, only to find myself surrounded a few minutes later by a small flock of chatty and conversational ravens who wanted to show me their new tugboat, whereupon I surrendered to the inevitable, disembarked from my ship and went to admire said rusty old bucket. Oh well, SL is all about being social, isn't it? And they gave me a margarita, so that wasn't so bad. :-)

The second time I attempted the course, two of the regions that comprise the course were offline. As I attempted to figure out an alternate path that would allow me to complete the course in under three years, my SL client crashed, throwing me off-world and my ship to the bottom of the sea. And then, when I logged back in and managed to find the spot where I'd crashed previously so as to continue the course, I didn't even get a chance to rez my ship.... BAM! Client crashed again. *mutterfume*

The third time I attempted the Passages run, everything seemed to be going well. I was making good time, the previously-offline regions along the course had come back online again, and I had no chatty wildlife turning up en-route to distract me or get in my way. I rounded the rocks that marked the southernmost extremity of the course, zipped back up toward the Mare Nostrum navigation point with the wind behind me, rocketed around the point and started back on the homeward stretch... and then one of my RL cats decided to snuggle up to the back of my laptop and knocked out the mouse plug. *sigh* So I got that fixed... and then BAM! The SL client crashed once more. Strong language followed shortly after.

I think that's enough sailing for one day. SL sailing has many charms, but things like these RL sailors never had to contend with... *sigh*

Anyone else with an interesting traveler's tale?

I hope to, having just recently taken the plunge and purchased a delightful yacht.

There was something that tickled me about "only to find myself surrounded a few minutes later by a small flock of chatty and conversational ravens who wanted to show me their new tugboat", however :)

LOL. I loved this post. It was amusing and summed up second life in a few short paragraphs.

I often wonder what someone would think if they had never heard of SL, but somehow was able to read these forums. Would they think we were all crazy talking about a talking dog with a speedboat and chatty ravens with a rusty tugboat drinking margaritas.

I still smile at many memories.
e.g.

A friend and I were standing at the edge of a Linden paved road in the old part of SL.
A big car ('auto' to some) pulls up and out hops a very diminutive biped moose.
He very politely inquired as to whether we would like to go for a ride and socialise.
He wasn't normally the pushy type, but he was trying to organise a better social life for his friend, the bear, who was sitting in the car.
We're not talking furries here. We're talking toons :)

We were on a land mission, so we politely declined and wished them well.
Off they shot with a screech of wheels!
I hope they found good sim crossings and hot babes :)

It would be interesting to see if the Beatles were around today what would happen if they did a Magical mystery tour in SL.

Most canines are rather refined and domesticated, and would take offense at being called wildlife. :D

In case anyone's wondering, no, it wasn't me on the speedboat - I was hanging out with my friend the hermaphrodite frog.

My friend the frog told me a story - s/he tried to visit a mall, but somehow ended up in a biker bar, where a scantily clad woman tried to proposition him/her.

No, my friend did not take her up on it - s/he isn't that kind of frog!

Was I human when you took me on that sailing trip? Was I a talking cat at the time?

In hindsight, and in the context of this splendid thread, I'm wishing you had been a talking cat at the time.

You were human, although in your defence, you were wearing a jaunty pirate tricorn adorned with large plumes.

I recently posted my sailing story in another thread. I also recently did the SL Kessel Run (65 sims with two crashes, at a height of 850m) and the train from Mocha to the Ferry in Purple, and up to Calleta. I'll have to put some of these stories together :-)

One time I flew across a huge mainland area, the lag was low and sim crossing was hardly noticeable. I managed to elevate and decrease altitude to stay out of boundry walls. The view was unbelievable and a few times people flew up and jumped in with me :)

I have thought about that before, though....lol. We all talk about these things on the forums seriously and as though they're normal because......well.....they are. To SLers. However, others might think they had stumbled onto the forums of a sanitarium......lol

I just sometimes have to smile to myself and shake my head and feel sorry for all of those non-SLers who just wouldn't "get" it.

And I think maybe I should get a boat! I've never met a group of partying ravens! Not even on SL.

Now that gave me the laugh of the day...reminding me of when I first saw Star Wars in the cinema, with my mom-I was six at the time! :D

SL is a Dr Seuss world..isn't it great?. :p .or better yet Lewis Carrols "Alice in Wonderland" world. I even remeber a guy who tried making a sim like Wonderland back in 04..it was soo funny.

This coming Sunday is Ted Suess Geisel's birthday. I once read his biography -- a very strange and mischievous man (in a good way). I bet he would have loved Second Life.

Chatty ravens? I'm hanging out in the wrong places . . .
