Security Orbs (or Bees) Question

I am going to put a security orb in my skybox but I have a some questions since my former partner owned & operated the only one I'm familiar with. It was the hippoSECURE. I've seen references to the Psyche orb and a friend gave her reference to me of LandProtector.

I'd be interested in comments on the different systems, primarily ease of setup, plus one that will work at 1600m altitude.

Big question: Ok, I know this sounds stupid but math was never my strong point and the metric system totally baffles me. I own a 512 parcel, regular dimensions for a 512. I put my home in the middle of the land and with some very rough math by rezzing prims to measure, lengthwise there is approximately 30m within my boundaries, but only about 14m widthwise.

Sooooo....I have no clue how to figure the radius that will not infringe on my neighbors' land. Also, since I'm in the air, I only care about the security around the "airspace" around my house, not the ground. The orb my partner had was set at the 96 radius, but we lived on a much larger parcel.

Now about those security bees :) On Xstreet I saw two different brands. Those sound like a hoot but I have two concerns about trying those: (1) Do they have to be outside or can the hive be inside the house and the bees can still fly outside? (2) One of the brands I saw said that the bees would continue following the person for a short distance (or words to that effect) on the next property. I certainly don't want that!!!

Thank you in advance for any information/help, especially on the radius configuring. Those of you who don't like security orbs...carry on. ;)

Personally, i use the LandProtector. Its simple to use. Just click on the wizard button and it walks you through the setup. Also, it wont let you go past your land border into someone else's land, regardless of the range you set it to, so that is one less worry.

the one I use is from Thomas Conover, Land-Security-Orb. it sets up within 5 minutes & guarenteed not go over your property boundaries. I tested it with an alt, so I know that part is true. so if your parcel is 30m x 14m, then set it for a 30m radius. it will just cover your parcel. no fusing with notecards. gives up to 30 seconds warning. I've used mine about a year & I've had no problems.

The bees are a lot of fun; they basically just bump the avatar around continuously. Ours stop at the parcel boundary more-or-less. Some people have fun with it for a little bit, but all eventually leave, because it is visually too much. A determined person, however, can just ignore them, of course - the one we have does not have a timer that does an eject, but if I were to code one up it would do so after 10 or 15 minutes. However, there are quite a few versions - there's probably one around somewhere that does this.

One important aspect to this sort of security is how you configure it. If you have to set up a list of "permitted" avatars, it can be a pain if you have more than one.

Definately agree. Conovers is what I use also and it's a no-fuss, total function device. It uses the llIsOverLand (or whatever it is exactly) so it cannot and will not affect anyone who isn't over your property, reguardless of how large you set the radius. It's also extremely easy to set access for both guests and sub-admins.

Which LandProtector version do you use? After my friend recommended it, I went to their store today and saw an orb, radar and wall version.

Thank you for responding :)

Thank you so much, Esmie and Dana. I'd never heard of the Conover orb so I will definitely be checking it out. That would be WONDERFUL to be sure it did not bleed into other parcels.

One reason I decided to go this route again is because I got an odd IM from someone identifying himself as my neighbor (after going down to ground level to check, he *is* my neighbor insomuch as he has property next to mine for sale. He wanted to "warn" me about another "neighbor" (on the other side of me - also with land up for sale). According to Neighbor 1 who IM'd me out of the blue, Neighbor 2 "went off on *him" due to my no fly restrictions. I checked that when I first bought the property thinking it might stop people from coming up to my skybox, but then realized that only works if someone is beginning flight from my parcel, not if they're already in flight, plus, many people know how to get around that anyway so it was only in force about 2 days; however Neighbor 1 said this complaint was yesterday so that wasn't valid. Then he continued on some diatribe about land not selling well, etc., etc. We ended the IM pleasantly. About 10 minutes later he said, oh, btw...I flew up and sat on the pillow in your house the other day...hehehehehehe.

Ok, that just sort of creeped me out. Like WHY did he want me to know that. I would have never been the wiser. My response to him was that I like to be respectful to neighbors and their property and personally don't like ban lines; I was hoping to not need a security orb but his comment had now convinced me to install one. ;)

Oh, Esmie...thank you for helping me out with that radius thing. Really appreciate it!!

I still think the bees are too funny (still never saw them in action...is there a demo someplace?) but still wondering if they are better served on the ground. I could put a beehive on my roof...could make for entertainment when I'm home. *grins*

Another thumbs up for this as well. Doesn't go over property lines and works really well and simply to set up with a choice of tp home or just eject from the parcel. Creator is a nice guy as well and gets back to you quickly with responses to questions. My friend has the bee one and I find it really annoying because he'll always tp me over and forgets to turn off the damn thing lol.

I also use Thomas Conover's Land-Security-Orb.

Setting it up is a piece of cake and the possibilities are endless. Adding people and/or groups is easy. You can set it so your partner can work the device too and, for me specially handy, with an ad-on I can protect my entire Simwide platform without it bothering the public on ground level.

Also lifetime updates and good support from thomas are a mayor plus.

We had (or maybe still have.... I haven't tried checking lately) a parcel where I live that used bees. They ARE fun to watch; however, the bees are most effective if your parcel is damage-enabled. That way, your intruder will be sent home in pretty short order.

Sounds like the Conover orb it will be. I really appreciate all the feedback.

I went to Thomas Conover's store last night and read the information note card. I was very impressed as well as with the price!!! At least half of most systems I had been looking at.

Wanting to make sure it would work at the altitude of my skybox, I sent an IM to Mr. Conover and was most impressed by his quick response and to please let him know if I had any trouble with it, including he would come and set it up personally.

Now that is wonderful service!!

'me too' for the Conover. I don't always use it, but have found occasion to, for a time. Have it sitting there rezzed, and set up in case I need it. It was easy even for me to set up and set the configuration.

If you use Hippo Security, when you set the boundaries you can add a -p on the end (explained in the manual for it) and it will restrict it to your parcel. That's handy if your parcel has an irregular shape or if, like mine, there is protected land running through it.

- I can set my radius to something very big, and then adding -p cuts it back to my land only.

I did notice some other interesting items while I was there. And you're so right...when merchants give exceptional service...that's where I want to take my business.
