Every night slowdown - What's going on?

In the UK, everything is fine til about 5pm and then things start slowing down.

Teleports stop working, rezzing slows down.

Until we get to around 11pm then things almost wont rez at all, I can't even view notecards as they time out.

Been like this for a few evenings now.

Are we having major problems at the moment?

Cannot really answer for today/tonight, but for the past couple of days, LL has been rolling out another new server version and that does seem to have really screwed things up.

I can't script. I've been getting a "Unable to Upload Asset" error message every time I try and save. Anyone else having that problem?

Last night I tried unpacking a box into my inventory and it errored and only actually unpacked 2 of the thing from inside the box into my inventory

As I said, I have a notecard that I want to read now in my inventory and I can't as it opens up the window, waits then says:

[15:17] The system is currently unable to process your request. The request timed out.
[15:17] Insufficient permissions to view notecard.

So I'm stuck.

Teleports have been down since about 5pm uk time.

This has been for a few evenings now. and it's almost unusable.

I can fly about but can't get anything done really

That would happen if you're on an outdated viewer. With server 1.27, LL deprecated the old style of compiling scripts client-side and requires upload and server-side compilation.

I don't recall right now in which client version this was changed, but I know that 1.22 and newer work fine, and 1.20 and older don't. Current versions of Cool Viewer (both the 1.19-based one and the newer one) work fine. Nicholaz' 1.18 and 1.19-based ones don't.

You shouldn't be able to log in with official 1.21 or older anymore anyway (unless you changed the channel), so if you're using an older Cool Viewer, update that ... if you're using another older third-party viewer, check if they have newer versions than what you're running.

I'm on the latest Nicholaz viewer and SL 18. I hadn't had a problem until today! Thanks for the tip though.

All scripts are compiled server side and are independent of any viewer. It is a server setting.

This is a fairly common problem whenever there are asset server slowdowns. There is really nothing you can do or change except to keep trying or just try later.

For reference: https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-4528
http://nicholaz-beresford.blogspot.com/2009/07/bleeding-edge-updated.html (see comments)

Yes, it's a server setting, but viewers older than 1.20 don't support it. (The code is there, but the name of the region capability was changed at some point.)

I may have explained that incorrectly before, I was trying to keep things simple. The point is, since server version 1.27, older viewers (and this definitely includes Nicholaz' viewers, I'm using 1.18 BE myself) cannot upload scripts and fail with the exact error that Aree reported.

That's very interesting. I'd somehow thought they shut off bytecode uploads a long time ago. It's about time they did, that's for sure!

Day Oh's comment on that jira seems apt for distinguishing between asset service glitches and the newish "thou shalt not upload bytecode" situation:

Since he said "blue pop window saying Unable to upload asset" and not "modal gray dialog that goes ding and says failure to upload" it seems more likely he's talking about this issue [no bytecode upload]

I'm in the UK and I don't see the pattern you describe. Are you in a comparatively isolated location or on an ISP with poor contention ratios? Are you or someone near you running file-sharing software?

Thank you for the clarification Xbaquiyalo. Yes, I had assumed the same, that when the switch over was made, they disabled the ability to upload at the same time. My speed reading got me into trouble again, my eyes may have seen "unable to upload" but my brain saw the "failure to upload" timeout error. :p

Things have been borking a bit for the past week, during the daytimes which would be your night times. I'd say just peak usage. And Zindra coming online maybe, with more builds now? And more people using new viewers.

Every so often things seem to get bumpy then they even out.
