I can't seem to find an affordable house to rent or buy in SL. I only have 445L and am clueless. I would appreciate names of either landlords or places.

Also need help finding free hair for my avatar and furniture. also would like to create clothes for my avatar without sigining up for a prenium account. I basically need to know where to find good quality textures.

Also need to know names of places that sell good quality bits ie gentials for female avatars. thanks.

Try these website for setting up your avi free/cheap:

http://virtual-freebies.blogspot.com/

http://slfreestyle.blogspot.com/

http://fabfree.wordpress.com/

Lots of newbie free places have texture packs as well as clothes, hair, skin, etc..

I don't think you have a chance in hell of buying or renting anything without putting money in the game.

And adding to what those lovely ladies said I offer this:
Do not stress about living somewhere. There are always places such as NCI (find it in search) who allow you to set a spot to home.

You will need more then what you have to rent and rent is often weekly so better to have a reserve set aside before jumping in.

Good luck.

I can supply you with a starter island of 1024 metres for 2211 Linden per month. That is the best what I can do for you, you can have a free house to live in which has a value of 4000 Linden. Ain't that a deal.

Dont even think of a place to live for several months or longer I almost 5 years here and dont rent or own any land, its basically a ego thing, and not needed :) And NCI is a good place to set as home like Mac said.

Just ask the homeless man on the corner.

I could not disagree more! Having a home—even though unnecessary—is an immensely gratifying and creative experience. Owning property and turning it into my little slice of paradise has been the most satisfying aspect of SL.

Yikes! During my first few weeks in SL I was more concerned with getting a decent pair of shoes than anything else. The longest journey starts with a single step.

And if you really want to rent a cheap house, some rental appartments go from 150 L$ a week. But 450 Linden won't get you far anyway.

Just buy a few extra lindens, and search for houses. :)

Ironically, I think many folks--myself included--wanted a place of our own a whole lot more when we started out than we do after being in-world for a while.

If a new resident is really heart-set on having a place of their own, it can be pretty inexpensive, and starting small is really more instructive than starting out with lots of space and prims.

I used to rent out little Mainland parcels (256 sq.m.) with a starter skybox and about 50 spare prims for L$50/wk. That was a loss-leader, but many of my current tenants (now with much higher rent) got started that way. (I'm not trying to expand anymore, so I don't do that now unless a current or former tenant wants to start out a friend.)

I'm fuzzy on the details, but Ravenglass Rentals used to have rentals for newbies. Not sure how new you have to be or the cost, but it's worth checking out.

Why would you have to sign up for a premium account to create clothes for your avatar? I'm confused on that one. Stick with a Basic account and create away!

For hair and furniture, try Sarah Nerd's Freebie Paradise, Enkythings, the Gnubie Store, Yadni's Junkyard, and just about any welcome area that caters to newbies. (You'll start to see the same things over and over at some of them though.)

Anyhow, for some decent textures at little or no cost, check the Library in your inventory, Yadni's Junkyard, and the Gnubie store. Also check the Events listing (and possibly join some of the in-world education groups) for classes - I occasionally see prim skirt classes, prim shoe classes, and jewelry classes and every now and then a texture clothing class. You could also try searching XStreetSL and OnRez for textures and sorting by cost starting with the low end.

I don't use bits myself, preferring those painted directly on my skin, but I have heard good things about Winter Ventura's system, so it might be worth checking out her profile picks to find her store. I think bits have also been discussed in the forums here before, so maybe worth a search if you have time.

I would do a class on "SL On A Budget", except I'm not the one to teach it...I routinely spend $50 to $100 a month (US, not lindens) on SL, and consider it part of my entertainment budget. Considering all the hours I spend in world, it's the cheapest entertainment around!

But I do have one cost-saving measure for the OP: Don't buy female genitals. None. Nada. Not the scripted stuff like XCite, and not the prim pussies. A good skin will have the appropriate parts painted on. That, and an ability to chat emote, are all you need.

I do have lots of this stuff myself...various attachments and enhancements. But 95% of the time, they aren't needed.

My priorities would be:
-Good skin, in at least a daytime and evening makeup
-Good hair (an assortment of colors and styles. At least one casual style, one formal updo, and one Hottie style).
-A good Animation Override.
-Several good pairs of shoes and boots. Color changing ones can help you coordinate with your outfits for less $L.
-Clothes. You can find some good freebies, and you definitely should. But it will be time consuming, because you'll have to try on and discard a lot of chaff to find the wheat. When you buy, wait for sales and buy from the places Honeybear Lilliehook does...the upscale stores. There is a noticeable difference.

All that, and putting it together into an integrated look, or set of looks, will take a while. Maybe several weeks to a month or two.

AFTER that, is plenty of time to start thinking about land and a place to play house. It IS fun, and I wouldn't want to be homeless at this point. But take your time. Learn about SL first, and especially about the different types of land and costs and risks.

You will not be able to rent a place for L$445, as rent by definition is a recurring payment.

I suggest visiting NCI, the Shelter, or the various freebie blogs linked here. All of them can provide free items like this.

You can find free textures in the NCI locations as well. However in order to create more than very simple clothes you will need to edit the textures yourself in an art package, and you can't do this with textures you obtain in-world. So you will either need to draw your own textures or buy them from art sites on the web. If you find it hard to draw your own textures, you could look at a texture generator like Genetica, Texture Maker, Filter Forge, or Werkkzeug3. You do not need a premium account to create your own clothes, or indeed to create anything in SL.

The best known brand for genitalia is XCite; there are others available too. Note though that these parts are entirely unnecessary in order to have sex; they just add some automated responses.

Yep, me too. I bought my first mainland parcel within my first month--couldn't wait to get started building and landscaping. I've since sold and moved to my second--and perhaps final--mainland parcel, but never came to regret that first purchase. I didn't bother to change the clothes I picked when my avatar was first created until about two months had gone by, didn't buy hair until I was here about six months, didn't change from the default skin for nearly a year. Now don't get me wrong--I love shopping for clothes and hair and jewelry, now. But my first priority and greatest pleasure is still working on and puttering around my own land. If I didn't own mainland--or rented on some estate that gave me complete freedom within the TOS to do what I wanted with my land--I wouldn't bother with SL.
