I tried the Windlight viewer and discovered that any of my below water places were now just very dark with visibility at about 0.1 meter. I could not see any of my objects until I tripped over them.

Is there some option to restore underwater visibility to normal?

Yep there is!

Under the same tab for adjusting the time of day, there's a neat lil' Enviroment editor. Look for the Water tab.

Unfortuantely if you lower the under water fog to the point that it looks nice, underwater, from the surface the water has no color :(

THere needs to be a dual slider, and underwater fog value and an above water water fog value. They need to be drasticly different settings to look nice from above and below the water. :(

I.e. 4.0 look sgreat from above, which is why it's the default :) But about 1/5 looks good from below. At 1.5 it looks like the water is completely clear from above :/

Thanks for the info.

Hmm. It says I have to have a video card that support atmospheric shaders to change the water. I don't think my NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440 knows about these things.

I'll scrap Windlight until they make the default something more decent.

This has been reported in JIRA:

http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-3382

In the comments, Torley indicates that they are working on this to (a) allow lower-end graphics cards to adjust underwater fog, and (b) allow users to adjust underwater and above water opacity separately, so it can be pretty clear underwater without looking totally transparent above.
