I've been working quite a bit on my Burning Life parcel which starts in less than 2 weeks and I'd like to give away a mud mask as part of my installation. I'd like it to look like the mud/avocado masks you see the ladies that lunch crowd use at the beauty salon with just the eyes and mouth exposed.
I briefly looked into using the skin templates to create a facial tattoo but I think that would entirely replace an avatar's skin and I don't believe I can create it as a clothing layer. Am I correct in this or is that something possible to do?
My other option is using prims and texturing but I don't think that will look so hot as it would likely need quite a bit of tweaking for individual avs. The last option would be to buy a full perm sculpted mask with the eyes and mouth showing but a cursory look on Xstreet didn't find anything. Any brilliant ideas or resources RA?

As far as I'm aware you would have to make it out of prims, sculpted or otherwise, unless you're willing to make the whole skin. I know if the skin is editable then I think you can edit the skin and replace just the head part, but that would mean making a copy and you'd still have the problem of matching skin tones etc, and it wouldn't work for the no copy/no mod skins. If there is another way I don't know it, but then I'm not exactly an expert lol. I love the idea though. Whenever I do face masks in RL, I end up eating the cucumber before it does any good lol. Maybe in SL that wouldn't happen

I know Brann has an avocado mask so I have to ask her about how it was made but I suspect it was a sculpt. It's all part of some freebies I'm going to give away as part of BL so I'll probably end up making it with prims since I'm too lazy and inept to make a sculpted mask and too cheap to buy a full perm one if I could even find it.

a sculpted one could possible be just as much trouble with fitting on someone with an exceptionally big nose for example. There seems to be as much difference in the face as with anywhere else on the shape.

Make sure it costs about 30 thousand Lindens. That's about as real as you can get.

One option might be to offer a shape with a sculpty mask and provide instructions on translating the slider values over to a copy of their own shape.
Yeah, I know that's messy.
Perhaps a few versions of a sculpty mask that's mod so it can be sorta scaled to fit.

How about some kind of cunning particle effect? A particle emitter (or more likely, a group of emitter prims) embedded just below various spots on the skin of the face, that emitted very tiny blobby mud particles for a very short distance. Dunno how well it'd work, since you'd have to factor in how it would look when viewed from different angles, but if you got it working you could easily adjust the exact positions of the emitter prims to account for different facial structures.

I have seen prim masks that look pretty tight. It could be like belts and shoes and buttons. We don't really expect them to be perfectly aligned and unless someone is camming in close enough to be intimate with the avatar, it should still look good.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. Although I just wanted this as a freebie giveaway for BL, I hate having my name on something really ugly so I might just bite the bullet and delve into the scary and steep learning curve of trying to make sculpts. I've meaning to get around to picking up some basic sculpting skills anyways so this might be a good time to attempt it.
