Hiya,
I've had a good ol' hunt through the knowledge base but can't seem to find the answer to this. What's the max distance Voice travels?
i.e. If someone has voice set to be heard from their avatar's position, how far away can they be and still hear people talking?
Also can they hear you if they're on another sim?

SL Voice does travel across sim lines. It does not have an conversation limit (for instance, 20m 'talking') as far as I have ever been able to determine. Voice range is dependent on absolute volume with a certain amount of distance falloff, your mileage may vary.
Here's looking forward to some sort of automated normalization.

In a private IM session with a friend, voice travels everywhere! I've never had drop off, or lost communcation due to distance between the two of us. Now, losing the connection due to clumsiness...clicking the wrong button....that's a different story!

I believe 20m is just about right for regular chat. And if I'm not mistaken, it doubles if you use 'Shout'.

I've noticed that sometimes voice travels MUCH farther than typed chat. (>_< I was in Luna once and very clearly heard a guy on voice from halfway across the sim. I don't know how far he was, but I had walk closer and use Shout to reach him. (=_=)

From: Siobhan Noyes In a private IM session with a friend, voice travels everywhere! You are kidding me- I thought that was all private- is there a way to make it private? I was talking with a friend while we were shopping in a store- Its only the people who have voice chat that can hear then isn't it?

The private chat with which you are talking to one person can be heard by that ONE person, no matter where they are in SL. BTW I was in a private voice CONFERRENCE for the first time last night...don’t ask me how to set it up, I was added to the conference.

There are a lot of variables involved here.
There's the individual settings on the sliders against the avatar names - which you can set to suit the distance. Particularly useful in a conference or performance situation.
There is the volume controls on your PC and you may also have one on your headset.
Ther are the volume settings in the SL client Preferences.
I guess that if you maxed out all the settings you could be heard half way across a sim.

What Graphic said, plus, yeah - only people with voice enabled can hear voice chat - those that do have little white dots over their avie tags. Also, I haven't used voice in a while, but, I believe you can cam in on people having an open conversation and listen in (I believe it's the default setting - "hear voice chat camera position" , so that definitely affects how far voice chat can be "heard"...........

I don't know what the distance is, but voice can also be heard based on the avatar's camera position. So you could be half a sim away and hear voice *if* you are on the same channel. But you could be 5m away and not hear them if the parcel you are on is using a different channel.
As for text chat, shouting is up to 100m. Not cool.

In a private IM voice session, I can talk with my friend who is way on the other side of the SL universe...and we are the only ones hearing the conversation. Note: we've also done a private friends voice chats, too, with little falloff.

Voice, in open chat can travel the length and breadth of a sim, but not across the sim border. I could hear a conversation between 2 people 80m from me. Wasn't very interesting chat, either. If you want fully private chat, use voice in IM. This works like regular IM and you can chat to anywhere on the grid.
If you're on your own land, use the setting in the land menu "use a private spacial channel" - this limits your open voice chat to within that land parcel only.

From: Butch Adzebills Voice, in open chat can travel the length and breadth of a sim, but not across the sim border. It can cross the border. But perhaps only within 10m of the sim border? I hear cross-sim voice in the Ahern (+3) welcome area, and have heard it from the Morris sandbox to Bonifacio in particular.
