My newly wed wife and I are looking at starting our own shop of things we have made that have WOWed friends and have subsequently prodded us that we should try to sell them. I would like to know what recommendations residents may have for shop venders that meet some or all of the following requirements.

-Low Prim
-Easy setup and add to.
-Has some system to make distributing product updates easy.
-Per vender or preferably per item profit sharing.

Thanks in advance.

Another option since you are just starting out are the free vendors from OnRez. I am not sure if they do the profit splitting, but they have the benefit of being able to link your product sales to their website listings if you want.

What kind of item are you selling? If there is a target audience, there will inevitably be target locations.

Nekko? Goth? Steampunk? Classy? Professional? Machinima based? Depending on your theme, you will seek vendors in specific locations.

However, sometimes it's just cool to get your product in a spot that has (legitimate) higher traffic counts and passer-by sales.

Look into Creevetown--although it is Steampunkish based, the design and management of the sim is super high quality. And because the community seeks out artists as their vendors, they have an extremely low weekly rent, and accompanying high prim allotment. They just shifted sims recently so their traffic count is a bit lower...but still very nice. Before their move they had a very high natural traffic count, and they expect it to reach it's previous average in time.

The vendors are filling up fast, so check it out while they last.

Like the good people above me have already said...Hippo is pretty thorough and relatively easy to set up, configure items from the web etc...which is great.

Anyway, regardless of which vendor system you choose, I wish you and your newly-wed wife the very best of luck with your business....

I use abVendors; they're great so long as you're careful writing the notecard, and only 3 prims each.

Hi and congratulations on your recent wedding Mortus.

I know everyone here has made some excellent recommendations for vendor systems, I do feel though that it should be pointed out that some malls and clubs do not actually allow vendor systems to be used as they believe them to cause lag. Also a number of sl residents including myself, actually do not like vendor systems, for me personally I don't like having to sit and wait for each item to rez as I scroll through them, I prefer to see all the products available at once. It is very rare I ever buy from vendor systems because I just do not have the time to sit and wait for each item to rez. So you may want to think about trying a few different methods for selling your products before you make a final decision.

Good luck with your new business and wife

Lag issue: it depends of how the script has been made. If it's a good one it wont generate lag. Networked vendors can be laggy too, but the phrase "all vendors generate lag" is a myth.

I don't like vendors neither, as I don't like put things in a box but I have to. No one likes that, everyone of us would like to show the objects rezzed, but in most of the cases that is not an option when you have 117 prims per 512 sqm. If you have a 50 prims jewelry you are using almost half prim amount that 512 sqm parcel supports.

So vendors are a solution for places where you don't have too many prims left and small places too.

Conclusion:

If you have a lot of land and the possibility to show rezzed objects: go ahead.

Else you will need to put things in boxes or vendors.

Kahiro......I was not actually saying all vendors cause lag or that I think they do, I was just letting the OP know that some places do not allow them because THEY believe they cause lag.

When I said individually rezzed objects I actually meant salesboards showing pictures of each item, not the actual item itself.

apologies if I confused people by not being clear what I meant, my bad lol

Check out Ab's Emporium. I've never seen his vendors cause lag.

Another Vote for Hippotech

I love the customizability and flexibility of Hippotech vendors. You get a sampling of different vendor styles, and can modify any of them (reducing prims, which is what I do). The customer support is great. And they're very powerful (I share one item's income with another person).

Admittedly they take a little more time and patience to set up than some vendors, but I think they're worth it for what they can do.

Good luck!

The issue of vendors versus selling out of prims is a matter of front-loading lag from texture rendering versus script lag that affects the sim.

I'll use Gurl6 as an example. Hundreds of hairstyles, skins, clothes, etc. are sold out of prims. And each hairstyle has a dozen different color packs or more. Each one of those textures has to render. Beyond the crowd of people that lag the sim with their AOs and tortured torii hair prims, that makes for a long time rezzing in. Many people here claim not to shop there precisely because of the lag.

Whereas if Six used a number of vendors to sell her items, you would take away the upfront texture rendering lag. You would have to render fewer textures at a time, and rezzing in wouldn't take as long. But it would take longer to browse the items because the textures would have to load on demand. It's a tradeoff and a matter of preference.

I have a little club that sits on the corner of a sim. Adjacent to it in the next sim is a bunch of stores that sell items out of prims. Even though my sim typically runs at 45ish fps and high time dilation, you still have to deal with the numerous textures from the stores which are built right up to the property line. If your draw distance is 256, you will spend quite some time rezzing in. Sucks, but what can I do about it other than move?

So, I don't mind vendors, especially if they are set to not rotate images while idle. Save me the texture rendering lag.

Thanks for the advice everyone and the heads up Rhiannon. I am seriously considering the HippoTech Venders for the main shop, and any satellites that would allow them, IE Clubs and Malls. This would cut down on running around updating product lines and pricing, and as many if not all products being sold are scripted and do not have auto-updating scripts nor are they perfect yet, this would make getting updates especially much needed updates out easier.

My one question about the HippoTech Venders is, if I set up one server at my residence which is in the same Sim as the shop, and I give my wife another to set up at her home, can we each update our product lines and have the two servers "Sync" or would we have to update both to ensure our full product line is available if one of our sims goes down?

It is safe to have a backup server in case one of your sims is down. But the overall management of the system is done via the web, and if you update a product, you can always redeliver individually to people by checking the payment log. The system is notrans and she would need management rights. And she'd also need access to the web account.
