How much do you recommend tipping to teachers for free classes, like at NCI and TuI? I've been taking some excellent beginner's building classes, texture, AO, etc ... and want to give a little something back when there's a tip jar out, I just have no idea what's appropriate!

Thanks for your input!

there is no standard in tipping anywhere :)

as the name suggest, tip the person as much or little to what they teached/entertained is worth for you

Alicia's right but a tip of L$1 isn't super useful to anyone. Maybe anywhere from L$50-L$500, depending on your finances? I would probably tip around L$300, which can be enough for a nice outfit in a lot of places.

Tip jars were mainly introduced when LL stopped subsidising education in SL, and I imagine it was not something that teachers generally felt comfortable about.

L$50 can seem like a fortune to a new resident, and the cost of several classes could soon become prohibitive. I'm sure most of the teachers I know in SL would rather teach a person for free than have them miss out because they felt they couldn't afford a tip.

If all a person has is L$2, then a L$1 tip becomes a generous token of appreciation. All things are relative.

L$50 - L$300 seems like an amount for an established SL resident with money to spare. I'd say anything between L$0 & L$50 would be most acceptable from new residents struggling to make their way, and who might need several classes to even begin to feel confident about rezzing a box :-)

Just give as much as you think the tutorial was worth to you. :)

I'm not really sure bout how much is a good tip for teachers. But thinking on what ppl pay to dancers, that aren't teaching us anything (just showing, sometimes :P ), I think a tip for a teacher should be more than you give to dancers... But that's just my opinion.

Have never gone to a class, so have never tipped a teacher :S

Have you never heard of Show and Tell? (Sorry, I couldn't resist).

Seriously, as a teacher myself, I like the way you think. At my class, which is aimed at newcomers, I typically get L$25 to L$100 per person as a tip...provided they have money to tip at all.

When I attend a class teaching advanced skills, I tip according to what I think the information is worth to me...often L$300 to L$500, or even more, if it's been a real eye-opening class.

I was wondering the exact same thing. I've been to quite a few classes that were just so informative and helpful..and I've learned how to do so much through them. Teachers in SL are so giving of their time and they deserve all the tips they get.

Speaking as one who takes a LOT of SL classes, used to work in a SL tipping environment, and will be teaching my very first SL class soon, I am always amazed at the number of people who don't tip ~anything.~ So, at least from my perspective, any size tip is appreciated.

I think some new residents aren't even aware of tipping (I know I wasn't when I began), don't realize instructors can receive tips (I didn't realize that either), so now when I attend classes, I tend to be the first tipper...and I notice others soon follow.

I attend 1-3 classes a day and as many as 10 each week. I CAN say that I'm thankful they are in most cases free. If a class is given and is average or above, then I always pay 300L even though many times I wish I could pay more. But even 300L can really start to add up each week! I have attended very few poorly given classes...maybe 2 in all. At those times I will tip 200L just because I know that they will be getting nothing from most of the others...and they are at least attempting to teach.... so more power to them.

What about when the class was really, not that very good? :( When the teacher hems and hums, and fumbles around for notes. Since it's free and the teacher is GIVING her time, I wouldn't dream of complaining. Frankly, even if I only learn 1 teensy thing, I'm happy... but does it deserve a tip?
Actually, I think I'll answer myself - Yes
I once didn't leave a tip because the class was mediocre, and I'm still thinking about it!
Guilt-Guilt-Guilt!

*edit: Oops! Just saw an answer above.

So you are saying my 3,000 L to 5,000L tips have been too much?

Thanks for the tip!

uhh ohh, does that mean I need to tip you for teaching me something?

Not too much at all! By coincidence, I'm teaching a class this afternoon on...umm..umm..running. In SL. Yeah. >.>

I tip exorbitantly in general, simply because I can afford to. When I tip dancers at my favorite club, I tip a few hundred L$ at a time, and tip the club itself 2000 L$ at a time. I think tips should depend on the amount you can comfortably afford.

If I'm taught something I offer a tip, but I ask first because I don't wish to offend.

Well as a teacher at TUi, we have the philosophy that we do what we do since we love to do it. We don't expect tips... they are nice but not always expected. Our tip jar is actually a combined supply jar/tip jar so we kinda have to keep it out.

There are some students who come to my classes and don't tip me... Do I care? No... These are usually the people who not five minutes before said "Great Class!".

I would suggest tipping based on how well you feel the teacher did. Did they effectivly teach you? Was the class worth your time?

I've gotten tips of 10 lindens and more. Tip in accordance with what your budget says.

Have Fun!

LOL Nah, in my country we didn't use to make "Show and Tell" at school... don't think they do now :S Well, might do something similar, but can't remember atm, I'm sure I didn't Show and Tell anything at school.

Yeah, I think tips might depend on what you have. I would love to tip 1000 lindens to everybody, but I can't afford it (really poor avatar in here... and wally too, sent 8k to the wrong avatar and have never heard back of them *cries*. LOL. Tips accepted. LMAO. j/k). So I think that if I attend a class I would pay between 100 and 300 lindens (depending on the class, the teacher, and the money I have at that moment).

And a student recommending your classes... that's the best tip, I think.
