Hello everybody !

I'm about to buy a new laptop and I want to be sure the graphics card will be compatible with Second Life and its wonderful WindLight :)))

I found an Acer laptop with a nVidia GeForce 8400M GS.
And I see at System Requirements webpage that it seems compatible (GeFroce 8000 series).
Yes, but what does mean the "M GS" notation ? And I don't see it in the graphic here : http://blog.secondlife.com/2007/11/15/typical-frame-rate-performance-by-graphics-cardgpu/#more-1388.

I think it's OK but could you confirm me please :)

Many thanks. Have a good day.

Lycie.

NVidia GeForce 8400M GS is the DirectX 10 capable successor of the GeForce Go 7400 for laptops and technologically a slower 8400M GT video card. The performance is slightly above the 7400 and therefore it can represent current games fluently with reduced details / resolutions. For people who play occasionally, it may be sufficient.

The particularity of this video card are the "Unified Shader". Pixel- and vertex-shaders do not exist any more but 16 of the so called stream processors do the graphic work.

There's more on the 8400M GS at http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVidia-GeForce-8400M-GS.3709.0.html

The good news is that when I put 'nVidia GeForce 8400M GS' into the forums search, only 4 threads come up. (Yours included) There weren't really any problems with it for anyone here it seems.

Nobody has complained about compatibility issues with the 8400M GS on JIRA yet.

My laptop is running the Nvidia Geforce 8400M GT, which one step above the GS. Things have been fine for me. With the culmination of the rest of my machine I can max out the settings for Windlight and still get a decent framerate, along with everything else I run on it.

The "GeForce 8400M GS" is the middle bracket of the 8400 series but is still considered a 'Class 3' video card. They also make a 8400M G(low end) & 8400M GT(high end) of the series.
The "M" is used to denote it's the laptop version and not for a desktop. (M = Mobile)

It should work well with SL.

As Strife said, No Jira's about it, so that's always a plus.

Seeing this:

This specific Acer model with the same video, it's a dedicated 'card' which is always nice.
