"Sim" is short for simulator. In SL, land is divided into regions 256m by 256m. Each region has its own simulator. The terms "sim" and "region" are often used interchangeably, but "sim" more properly refers to the computer system that runs the region. More commonly, when people are talking about performance, they'll talk about the sim being heavily loaded or lightly loaded, while when people are talking about land or locations, they'll talk about buying land in such-and-such region or visiting a shop/store in such-and-such region.

Note that "sim" doesn't mean "computer". SL generally runs on computers that have four processors. Each normal sim will be assigned to one of those processors, so a single computer will run four separate sims. Openspace sims (or whatever they're being called today) will be assigned four to a processor, so a single computer might be running 16 open space sims.

"Prim" is short for primitive. Graphical objects in SL are built from one or more primitives. A single simple primitive has a basic shape - cube, sphere, donut, cone, etc. - but it can then be stretched, twisted, cut, rotated, or otherwise manipulated into other shapes. Skilled builders can create surprising shapes from a single prim. An advanced feature allows a prim to be flexible (e.g. tails). A more recent feature, commonly called "shapies", uses a separate image map to create a single-prim shape that can't easily be created by manipulating a single simple prim.

Nevertheless, for various reasons, many objects require more than one prim, and they add up very quickly. Since each prim requires the sim to track its location, orientation, and properties, they're a limited resource. Each region in SL has a limit on the number of prims it will support. Hence, when a region is subdivided into parcels to be owned by different people, each parcel gets a certain quota of prims. Therefore, when buying or renting land in SL, the number of prims you get can easily be more important to you than the amount of land area.

Not everything you see count as prims. The land surface doesn't (but you may be walking on prim ground positioned over the land, without realizing it). The sky and clouds don't. Particle effects (e.g. fireworks, or more commonly, "poofers" which send multiple copies of an image out from a point) don't. These things aren't implemented as prims.

Simple clothing on your avatar - anything you can change in Appearance Mode - isn't implemented as a prim, but many clothing items that you can buy are attachments, which are made from prims. Prims attached to your avatar don't count against the landowner's quota, but do count against the sim's total available resources. Hair and shoes, in particular, are often made from prims. It's not unusual for hair to be made from several hundred prims. Sometimes clothing will be a combination - for example, you might get a shirt where the body of the shirt is normal clothing, but there are prim cuffs in addition.

Merge "Top 5 Tips" and "FAQ: Notecards from Live Help".
Greasemonkey will be unnecessary once the forums are updated.
Winterfaire really does not belong here, much less need to be a sticky, but who's going to tell Katt this is not the place to post events.
Is " The Comprehensive Guide to Optimizing Parcels for Search" still relavent or is the information outdated now? It might do better in one of the more business oriented sections anyway.
One would think "do not post products for sale" would be just fine as a line in "About This Forum" but it does deserve to have it's own, easily seen by any new poster, sticky titled thread. This would make the top look something like this:

Can any1 of u pls tell me???

In the Account Information screen, find your USD balance. Right next to it, see the "Process Credit" in blue? Just click that; you can then tell LL where to send your USD, less USD 1 for a handling fee.

The admonishment about posting products for sale in this forum doesn't need to be here since it is part of the guidelines. Winterfaire shouldn't be here either, not as a sticky. I agree with merging the FAQ/Top5 threads.

The Comprehensive Guide to Search is still relevant. LL hasn't changed the elements of optimization.
