Lost in Transit...

Prior to a spot of Island re-modelling I decided (for safety's sake..hah!!) to remove my beloved Fuchsia Temple to the safety of my inventory (now I know what you're thinking..safety..inventory..safety..inventory..error!). Bearing in mind the temple took a month of pain-staking building and in my opinion the final product was pretty darn good..I was being very careful not to bugger up the 'take' process. So with every wall, column and step carefully highlighted I hit the 'take command'..and it was gone. With my inventory open I expected to see the 'Fuchsia Temple' appear in my list..but no..no 'object'..no 'Temple'..no nothing..it had simple vanished in transit.

I've lost a few items in the past but never while 'taking' to the inventory (at least I don't think I have). And a few items have mysteriously appeared in my inventory after I thought I'd lost them. Anyone got any ideas about what might have happened..?

damn that sucks! :(

try a relog
if that fails, clear cache, relog and see if it gets back while getting a fresh copy of the inventory

try rezzing a prim and take it to inventory to see if it popsup in there
maybe even try clearing cache and login in another region

all i can think off :(

Assuming you rezzed the last items in your "Lost & Found" and "Objects" folders, I have no idea.

But in the future, first thing to do (with SL so borky now adays) is to right click > More > Take a copy, then check inventory, then go take the original. That's saved me a TON of rebuild work in the past.

Losses on take do happen :( If you can't make the stuff reappear by twiddling your client-side cache and all, how private is your island? Can you ask for a rollback without ticking off too many people?

I rezzed, modded and took 30 times last night on 10 different items, it took a bout 30 seconds to rez sometime and the same to take. but no probs otherwise. maybe they are slow rezzing

Island as in private sim?

If that's the case, then you could ask for a rollback (although please do make sure of all the consequences of that. *Anything* rezzed/changed when it comes to prims/parcels will be reverted to the point you ask for. There's an article in the KB about it as well) assuming you own the sim and it's possible (nothing else changed since that happened).

If the sim is owned by someone else, you'll have to talk with the sim owner and they might be understandbly reluctant to have it done (or it may again not be practical).

If you're on the mainland then rollbacks aren't an option.

---

If you can't roll-back, it could still come back. On occassion some "takes" end up being delayed by a day or two (and do go through the whole Clear Cache, relog into a water sim like Hahne, and don't do anything until it's done fetching). This should actually be the first thing to do and try :).

---

Too late now, but:

if you're going to make major changes (and "Take Copy" isn't an option), use View / Statistics Bar and take a look at "Pending Downloads" (and Uploads, but usually it's Downloads that's the problem) under Simulator. That number can fluctuate, but it should regularly hit 0. If it's stuck somewhere (even stuck at 1 can be a problem) you'll encouter asset issues.

Next, make sure you're not experiencing any packet loss (in the statistics bar again).

Finally and depending on how thorough you want to be: rez a (preferably no transfer) inventory item that is not already being simulated (so something "unqiue", not a plywood prim, not the chair that's already there, etc) and take it back, clear cache and relog and check.

If the sim is having problems talking to the asset/inventory server then in nearly all cases the rez will simply fail (and you could loose whatever you rezzed, hence try something that's copy). The clear cache and relog case is just an added precaution, but not strictly necessary, but if there are asset issues the "take" will never actually make it to your inventory and the clear cache and relog would alert you to that.

If any of the steps fail, get the sim restarted and try again (or wait it out).

(You can go through the same steps when you're shopping and things seem/feel wrong. If the store is no build, just attach something new which is essentially the same as rezzing. If you want to take the extra step, grab a freebie or a demo and relog to see if it's still there)

(Edited to add that even with Take Copy you'll want to clear cache and relog since if the sim is having asset issues, the copy will appear in your inventory, but it's just a sim local cache that never ends up existing on the inventory server. After a tp or a relog, it would just vanish in that case)

What happened to "if you have the exact name of the object, a Linden can retrieve the lost item" ?

Lots of good advice there folks..handy for next time I do a spot of re-arranging..thanks.

As for the Fuchsia Temple..after a thorough search through the inventory it turned up..filed neatly away in the folder entitled 'Underwater Floating Debris'..knowing how SL works I should have looked there first..I feel such a fool!!

Thanks again..Perre (no longer homeless) :D

It may not be named Temple. Depending on the order you selected the items, it could be named anything, possibly even.. hmm... Object! :P I would sort my inventory by date and find the last object you received, it very well could be your temple.

It could have been a lot worse, so instead of feeling foolish just feel happy it was so "easy" :).

(It would/should have shown up in the "Recent Items" tab on your inventory window btw in case you're not used to using that :))

Yay! Glad it showed up! Maybe next time, try linking the entire shebang together and clicking "take copy" so that you'll always have a copy of it (as only one item!) in your inventory. Make sure that you have your inventory open at the time, so that you can see where it ends up, and that way you can select it, and rename it to "Fuschia Temple Build" or whatever...

Heh! I just finished building a really nice house and had the same thing happen. It seems that when I did the final linking, I linked a pre-built fireplace into the house and when I "Took" it, it all became "fireplace"! 30 minutes of brain-wrenching found the house, intact, in my Recent Items section. It was promptly re-named "House 6"...BTW, I had 5 different "fireplaces" in inventory, which are now all renamed also...<grin>

there is a trick to making sure it gets named properly. At least I hope it works, It always has in the past for me.
If you are taking unlinked objects all at the same time, once you have higlighted/selected them all do this:
hold the shift key and lick on the item with the correct name (e.g. Fuschia Temple)
This deselects the item
still pressing the shift key, click the item again and release the shift key
Then uses the take command
this makes sure this is the last item selected and SL uses this to name the folder

I'm sure some people will already know this trick and I don't know whether it works with huge builds, but as I said, it always has worked with me. But i definitely agree with the take copy idea.
Anyway, just incase you didn't know I thought i would post it. :)

I'm glad you found your items though Perre, The temple sounds great lol, fuschia!
