Hello everyone, I have been spending the last few hours of my SL time trying to locate a non-dark rp sim.
Let me try to explain what I mean. I want something that is clearly "in character" in the way that the dark rp sims are, but without the expectation of having to victimize or be victimized.
I don't have a problem with the dark sim. I actually play in one, however, it sometimes would be nice to escape into a lighter rp world. I have described what I am looking for to my friends as a "soap opera" rp sim. Bad things can and do happen. There are still villians and victims, but also romance, marriages, divorces, births, etc.
If anyone one knows of such a RP sim, please post the name, so I can go check it out.
Many thanks.

Many thanks. Well depends on what kind of role-play you want. If you don't mind predominately furry I'd say the wilds might work. I have been there a few times, and know many there. But it would help if we knew what themes you like and avatars.

Not into the furry thing. No offense to those who enjoy furry play, but it just isn't my thing.
I'm thinking like a newyork, sex and the city feel or something set in a suburban build. So, current or near future theme, non combat.
THanks for posting with a willingness to help.

I am not very good at role play but often wonder if there was lighter version, that I fit in. I was curious about Dune even checked out sim but it seem pretty empty. Never really pursued it afterwards. I heard rumor that there was Harry Potter roleplaying group in SL but been too distracted to find it too. I like being kid because its just playful, fun and innocent play for me but I don't do it much. I hear there are groups of kids that do stuff but most of places i.e adoption places made me want upset. Furry thing seemed interesting but places I went too seemed all geared to only few things and not very interesting. I am not into sexual or violent roleplay but I have years ago played Dungeons & Dragons and had passing interest in the Masquerade but I never really played very well. Few friends and I went to Privateer Space bit back ago roleplayed we exploring new worlds that was fun.

THanks for posting with a willingness to help. I'm not trying to be funny here, but what you seem to be describing is the bulk of SL. There are vast areas that are basically RL replications. Many even have people in them. I live in a SL that is basically a wackier, more arty, more visually sexy, version of my RL. I could be said to RP someone who can magically rezz and build stuff, fly, TP, breathe underwater, etc. When I meet people in SL, it's like meeting them in RL in terms of the interpersonal thing. I just accept that some/many of the people don't look like RL people.

Enoch, I'm with Sling on this: I think a large proportion of the 'relationships' here are close to roleplay and don't really require a particular sim. Finding a partner in SL doesn't neccessarily mean the RL thing. Just communicate your wishes and find a like-minded soul I think. Then the rest of the grid is your oyster

part of the reason i am looking for a rp sim is that i do not want the rl blending that seems to occur if you just go to clubs or live events or readings. I greatly enjoy those, but i am not looking for any relationship outside of a story.
Yet i love telling a story about a char and all that happens with them, and seeing how that story gets affected and told be others.

I am very interested in what the OP is saying here. This may be something that is coming due to such factors like the Sims online closing down. I Agree 100% , the moment you choose your avatar last name it is clear that you are Role Playing to some degree. However in order to increase the market for virtual worlds people need a context of a 'game' or a game within a game in order to break the ice socially, and to be entertained. So far SL is almost identical to RL in some key ways.. you have to work for anything you get... You have to find something that interests you and stick to it... and there is always someone ready to jump in and take your place if you don't want it. This does not seem like 'escapism' to me. By now we are used to taking on roles, we are joe123.nobody@hotmail.com or who ever at work or father, brother etc. So to sign on to SL with a different name and outfit is not enough to break the layer into real fantasy or role playing. So far most of the RP is dark.. this is cutting out alot of the potential market. I dont think its any fault of the RP sim owners etc, it works, but its a fairly basic formula with a story line that is situational as opposed to sequential or episodic. This in my mind represents an opportunity for creative people make new kinds of games, think drama mixed with casual gaming. Look around, SL's technical issues aside, is capable of delivering a fairly complete multimedia experience... but is so much more accessible to creatives than other competing indie game platforms, plus it has a built in user base and economy.. brilliant really. Enoch, If you have some time I would like to hear more of what you are looking for and I could throw some ideas at you of my own. That would extend to anyone who would have some interest Here , PM or IM , heck email me even thanks -whyroc

I heard there was a Pirate rp sim, it involves wooden swords so how violent can it be?

I was going to suggest Tombstone until your second post ruled it out, time-wise.
You might try wandering around Caledon, if you're not opposed to steampunk. I haven't been there much, but the people I've met there have been very friendly. I'm not sure how well that would work as far as avoiding rl blending - except that my (limited) observation suggests that people there already use speech and emoting to establish themselves in their preferred milieu, and that plus a few lines in your profile *might* set the limits you prefer.
Whyrock also makes some very good points.
Hm... now I'm picturing an RP sim with little houses and white picket fences and station wagons and puppies... I wonder if such a thing would take off? I mean, if you could finance it, and build up a core group - why the heck not?

Thanks for the tip of the hat towards the Victorian/Steampunk sims, Nic, but truthfully, Caledon is not exactly an RP sim (what exactly it is has been the subject of volumes of discussion on our message boards and blogs ). Call it "themed"--we play the roles of Victorian/Steampunks to varying degrees of "in character-ness", but there is no active plot line going on. There have been exceptions to this in the past, but these have been specific events. That isn't to say all the Victorian sims are like that--I know Antiquity has an active Pirate RP group, for example and Tombstone was already mentioned. I'm afraid I don't know much about the futuristic sims, but I do recall something about a Battlestar Galactica sim inworld that had a fairly active RP community.

Darkrose Perhaps
05-18-2008 08:54
I regret RealLIfe (tm) has grasped hold of me and refused to let me go, but most generally, Darkrose fits the bill. Although it is dark in its name and premise, there are lots of interesting people and events which take place. It is, I believe, dark only in setting. My origins are in the paper and pencil realm of old style face to face gaming, and I enjoy epic scale RP, larger than life heroes, villains, and situations. We offer all of that in Darkrose and more.
Ostensibly, the prince is a dark evil vampire of a thousand years, but there is actually a lot of story in the sim, which is light, silly, fun, entertaining, or sometimes ridiculous. While we all prefer deep immersion, real life can be depressing enough, so SL is still an escape from the doldrums of our mundane existence.
I would suggest to the original poster, if you are truly interested in finding some roleplaying which is not violence oriented, or 'dark' in the sense of requiring despicable acts performed by or upon oneself, to research further. There are a few excellent venues in SL. Yes, there are a LOT of mediocre and quite an assembly of crap venues as well. But there are some really good ones. Peruse the SLGames subforum. There are several interesting and enjoyable offerings posted.
And stop by Darkrose. Try the weekend first, or Monday or Wednesday nights. Usually, someone is present. Sunday afternoons are best, though I am writing this from my work desk as we speak, due to RealLife (tm) demands.
IM me if you have any questions, or would like an opportunity to engage with us. I am always available to new players. Well, that is, when I am online....*smirks*

Deadwood, SD circa 1876
So authentic you cannot wear anything not suited to the era...and if you want play you have to apply...very strict..but that's what makes it so good. You are in character when you hit town...

There are a lot of RP communities out there but there is no "directory" to find them (this would be great). You could try searching in world with specific keywords such as Elven, Mer, Battlestar, Medieval (a tough one because you will need to try all variations of spelling both correct and incorrect), Samurai, Anime, etc. Also this new thread just showed up: /165/88/259679/1.html

Yes, I knew Caledon was not exactly a roleplay sim, though I don't know if I managed to make that clear in my post. It came to mind as a response to one of Enoch's later posts: From: Enoch Kips part of the reason i am looking for a rp sim is that i do not want the rl blending that seems to occur if you just go to clubs or live events or readings. I greatly enjoy those, but i am not looking for any relationship outside of a story. Caledon jumped to mind as a place where one might, if one were so inclined, establish oneself strictly as an SL persona and not be called upon to impart RL details so long as it was clear one wished to avoid doing so. Not an RP sim, but possibly an alternative that would provide what Enoch was looking for. My first encounter in Caledon was with a gentleman who bowed and addressed me as Ms. Writer, and that has forever set the tone of the place for me. I keep meaning to revisit Caledon, but keep putting it off - in part due to a fear that I will wear or say the wrong thing and offend the sensibility of the residents...

It seems unlikely that one so articulate and perspicacious could ever wittingly give offense. Unwitting offense, on the other hand, will be overlooked by all and sundry. We would welcome your presence, or indeed anyone seeking a healthful and beneficial comradeship.
We of the Nation of Caledon pride ourselves on our humility, in fact. As to whether the "roll playing" mentioned above occurs, or is a daily fact of life, I can imagine that you will find someone here who is "in to" bread/dough play, as the young people are wont to exclaim.
-CoyoteAngel Dimsum Duchess of Caledon Primverness and Lovelace o'er the Sea Founder of the Library Militant Annoying Git of the 1st Water Keeper of the Light Beer
p.s. Not a role player. I just play one on Caledon Remote Viewing Steam-O-Vision (TM).

Are there any Role Playing blogs out there (like all the fashion blogs?) It sounds like a neat adventure for someone to explore and post about it, and then tell others how to get started.

It looks like one or more of them could be right up the OP's alley. Another possibility, if you like combat, is Samurai Island. Medieval Japanese theme.
