Some internet sites offer Linden $ at better rates to US$ than SL does. Has anyone any experience of buying from "outside" SL? Does it break any SL rules?

technically, it's against the rules to use anything but the Lindex...

NEVER buy $L from ebay!

SLExchange is fine, a well established company. Just research to the hilt before doing anythign with a third party.

So you are saying it is ok to use the illegal slexchange?

For the OP:

Be very careful of third party sites. If the rate seems too good to be true, it probably is.

SLexchange is NOT an illegal site
As long as thrid arty sites use Linden Labs Risk API you are ok to purchase funds from the exchange. When the spread is large I have purchased as much as 500,000 Ls from teh exchange and sold them for a 100/200 US profit or so on the Lindex and have never had problems with either the SLExchange OR linden labs.

At times when I am in a hurry to get my Lindens transferred to my Pal pal account I have used the SLExchange to do so since they usually have the money in my account in hours, a day at most.

Has anyone else been getting notecards or messages from strangers introducing themselves as Linden dollar sales people?

I know its not illegal, I was just teasing the poster who first says third party exchanges are against the rules, and then goes ahead and promotes one. :D

Perhaps I just felt contradictory? :)

I know, I phrased that one wrong.

In other MMO's it's acceptable to do so. I would think I'd put the idiot on mute at least. Do mute lists have limit?

In many other MMO's, like World of Warcraft, selling "game money and stuff" is actually a violation of the ToS, whereas in SL it is of course allowed.

So whether AR'ing them simply for saying "I can sell you L$" is worth it, I wouldn't personally have thought so. If, however, they're asking for your password so they can give you the money, or they're saying they are "officially endorsed by Linden Lab" then that probably is reportable.

I assumed that it was some money selling "service."

Not sure how people could buy L$ in-world any other way..

How would one buy $L from someone in-world, if the in-world currency is $L?

Short answer: You don't.

Long answer: They tend to direct you to a 3rd party site in which presumably, you'd put in a name/password (for the less honest, it's supposed to be your SL name and password) and then pay money via that. After a while, you'd supposedly get your money from their in world agent.

Not all of these are remotely honest, so I don't trust anyone that hunts ME out with a notecard to get money from me.

As already mentioned, LL provides a risk API for sellers of Linden currency. SLX uses it. What this attempts to do is weed out things such as someone selling Lindens that have been purchased using stolen credit card information or by other dubious means. If you purchase Lindens from a site that does not use this risk API, and it turns out the Lindens you purchased are felt by LL to be fraudulent, then they can freeze your account immediately, take the Lindens you purchased PLUS up to a 50% penalty. This can take your balance into the negative numbers that will have to be paid off before you can use Lindens in game again to make purchases. So while not against any rules, it is taking a very big chance.

WOW! Serious penalties! But where does the unsuspecting SL resident find these rules? It seems only fair that they should be well posted! I have never seen them - myabe blind!
