Do others find it interesting how clubs looking for staff brag about their group membership numbers?
One claims to have 10 000 members to their group btu lets look at the figures, how many are alt? how many joined and never gone back ? how many are no longer in SL?
I would be more impressed with a group who had say 200 active members than thousands of members who you never see again. What about you ?

1. Create Alt. 2. Send Alt to newbie places. 3. Spam away with Group Invited. 4. Go to forum bragging
I never take any club's claim serious. All those 'Most succesful Club in SL' places...Ya right lol

I would think that guests wouldn't care how many active members a club's VIP group has.
How many people are in that group is important to me, and to my staff. Group Notices are a key advertising tool.
The guests, I would assume, care less about how many people are in the group, and more about how many people actually show up for events.

Best way to tell is look at group membership, and see who has actually logged in within the last 7 days.
Groups serve all kinds of purposes though, so just because a group is big doesn't mean it's necessarily "more special."
* * * * *
Also, some groups tend to have members that haven't logged in for ages... this angers and frustrates some people, who tend to ask for the older membership to be "culled" once in a while.
As illogical as it may seem, some groups don't do much culling... not to look "inflated" but simply because they want any longtime, old members to be warmly welcomed upon their return after a couple of years.
Another reason: Kendra Bancroft, for instance, is in the Caledon group. Kendra is no longer with us in "real life" sadly, but it's because of that, that I would never eject her avatar from the Caledon group. I'm honoured that she's listed there.

I don't remember the exact wording, but the message one gets when removed from the group makes it sound as if one had been convicted of some heinous crime and was now an outcast from society. So I don't like culling. Someone who reads the message of being removed from the group may think I'm being mean and nasty.

I have sent out a few notices saying those who have not been active for 6 mths will be removed . nothing personal. Then a week later I start the culling

So I don't like culling. Someone who reads the message of being removed from the group may think I'm being mean and nasty. "You have been ejected from 'group_name' by X" All group owners (and officers?) get a message "Z has been ejected from 'group_name' by X" The first time I removed a member of a group, I did a frantic check of some ordinary group members to see if they had received a message that implied some wrong-doing on the part of the ex-member. That term "Ejected" always struck me as as coming from the same unthinking socially-impaired mindset that gave us ban lines. STAND AWAY FROM THE VEHICLE! RAISE YOUR HANDS AND KEEP THEM WHERE WE CAN SEE THEM! DO NOT FART! BANG! Going back to my first days in SL.. I noticed some avatars at an Infohub with "Officer" under their name. I assumed in my innocence that they some sort of LL police. I also thought that the "I" in VIP stood for Important (as in more important than other members for some reason) The group tag "Member" is probably an old joke in sex places.

You mean someone actually cares enough about "clubs" to worry how many people are in them?

From: Lindal Kidd Hey, if LL can do it, why not club groups? Well has LL done it or merely made a loop hole after all LL has not told ppl to go make many alts.

Not only for making the loopholes but for outrageous marketing claims based on them. Apparently, about 10 to 15% of the concurrency numbers from a few months ago was traffic bots, judging from the lower numbers since the "no traffic gaming" policy went into effect. LL used to tout the "size" of Second Life by pointing to how many millions of people had signed up...without mentioning that a large percentage of those accounts were inactive, or alts, or bots. Exactly what you complain about these groups doing.

Those are the clubs that spam you multiple times for that group invite you keep declining until you mute them or leave. They also tend to be the clubs where the host greets you again partway through the event because they're either on autopilot and never noticed you anyway, or they noticed you didn't tip them so they're trying to act artificially friendly.

Not True. The clubs with the most members are the ones that have a membership plan in place, only send out event messages once a hour and kick folks that abuse the group announcement function.
The level of their professionalism and the quality of their events and staff shows in the amount of members they have and retain.
I do not believe any club wastes time to make and tag alts just to boast membership numbers. That is a waste of time and effort.
The group membership is used as a valuable mailing list in this instance. The people that have not logged on in a long time still help the club by having the group visible in their profile. The others act as traveling advertising boards when they display the club tag over their heads while moving through Second Life.
A club that has a 10,000 person membership has a experience that many people (At one point) enjoyed. And since these folks did not make the effort to drop that group - then they obviously do not mind the level of spam and want to see the announcements just in case they want to drop back in there.

If a club sends me a notice once an hour, I'm gone, baby.

From: Lindal Kidd If a club sends me a notice once an hour, I'm gone, baby. That is why folks choose the club that has the policies that work for them. It is common that clubs have a member's list of people usually under 3 months old. These folks are looking for more social contact than older players are. I am a member of ANNOUNCE IT! It is a clearing house for clubs to use to make event announcements and I also have CLUB JOBS that club owners spam to get staff. These two groups have announcements all day. But I just click the box closed and ignore it if I am not interested. Some folks would let it get to them. But with millions of members - there are enough folks around that can departmentalize the club spam and not turn it into a major issue of annoyance.
