i have a group for my land and have granted media rights to people in my group so they can change the media in the about land window but for some reason they can't change the media. how can i correct this?

If you are using a media player, I think it has to be deeded to the group.

I'm not sure if it matters or not, but do they have your group active with the correct title (not the everyone title) activated?

yes they have the correct role for the group activated
from what i see i have all the settings in the group right even friends say it should be working but the media fields in about land is still not accessible for them

Is the land set to a group, or deeded to the group?
If it is owned by an individual but set to group, the group controls relating to land will not affect the land.
If the land is deeded to group (which will show the group as the owner), then the group land controls should work.
