Hi Im a newby to SL. I started about 7 months ago. However I started out on a computer which was not technical enough, had enough memory to be able to do anything but crash after about 20 or 30 minutes in SL and all during my performance on and off, everytime and because the memory was so low there were things, like teleporting that I could not even pick up on my other computer.I was stuck on Orientation Island for about 6 months trying to figure out what to do and I had to give up after awhile because this computer could not handle it.

But I now have my other old notebook computer up. Its been up for 2 weeks now. Theres always a sign that comes up on SL when I start with it that says my computer does not have the compatibility and memory requirements for SL and that my performance will eventually be ruined if I dont do something about it.

However on this computer, my performance is not even in the same world with the old one,I can teleport, walk around run fly turn use my cameras well to get different views, I can teleport, it runs fast and strong. It never crashes, so Im kind of confused about that.

Also Ive learned to teleport and have also learned to pick up note cards, show up at groups, attach objects, drag objects onto me and even sit on certain areas sense Ive been up for the past two weeks. But theres alot I dont understand at all, some of the language the words, buying stuff in SL, I need info on money, I havnt been able to go up to an advertisement that says to touch in order to teleport and touch it right and get to the teleport, Im having some problems although not like my old problems with my old puter, but still having some problems with functioning.

There are some things I should be able to do but cant like, when I right click on something like a horse or a wagon, and it lights up with yellow lights and I click to sit on it, my figure will like sit on the edge where theres no place to sit, she'll shell sit on top of the wagon something crazy like that so Im having a hard times with some of the stuff I need to know how to do.

I also need to learn to look up places of religion, I can teleport to the different Islands for religions, but I want to go to virtual reality churches or temples or places of worship and worship, ive been told SL has alot of great places I havnt found any yet to actually go to service at. I need info on that.

Also the difference between groups and teleports I dont understand, sometimes when I look up something under search, they'll
bring up a group and it says you can join then instead of the teleporting link it has a link to see the profile of the group, im wondering whats the point if you cant teleport to it, Im not sure how everything works, I need some refresher courses. I never took any courses
in the beginning anyway, Id like some advice on what tutorials to take and where to take them, Ive had so many suggestions and invites to different tutorials and even groups and I get so confused, I need some advice for beginners. What tutorials should I take and how do I get to them? Should I go back to orientation Island?

Welcome to SL.

I'd suggest you join NCI, the New Citizens Inc., a group for new users that offers lots of classes, and a much better place to hang out at than the Linden welcome areas.

Also there's a a place called the Shelter that is a fun place to go for new users, has games and parties and such, and there's lots of helpful people around.

As to inworld church services, I'm an atheist and not too well versed in that area. Putting "church services?" in Search All with the mature box unchecked yields few results, and with the mature box checked it has some things I don't think most people would view as real church services.

Googling for things like "second life" "church service" might do better than the inworld search did.

For religious services, try the Events tab in Search. There are quite a few religious events listed most days, although they may not be actual services. At the least, you could find some people who could help you. Also try searching on specific religious terms in the general search, or in Groups.

You can't go to a Group. Groups are collections of people, not places. Some groups have land, but not all.

Once you join a Group, you get the Group notices, which will include events. That's a great way to meet people with similar interests.

have fun!

Thanks! yes even though there are tons of stuff I dont know like about buying things and finding sand boxes and using different textures and learning the language and tons of stuff, still even as a naive beginner Im actaully having a good time. Sometimes I make the mistake of going to areas where there arent any people so Im trying to find out how to hit people populated spots, i need to learn to do that.

In the real world you find those by looking for the Singles Dance ads in the yellow pages Churches section. :) In SL I'm not so sure.

I'm sure you can find some "real" church services by searching for Catholic, Lutheran, Buddhist etc. in Groups and Events and Places and such, but there will a bunch of jokes, anti-church stuff, etc., possibly a lot more useless results than valid results.

I see the Anglican church has services inworld, according to Google.

Welcome to SL

Try typing "Unitarian" in your groups tab

I just did and looks like there are some Unitarian groups that might work for you. I bet their members would be clad to help.

Also there is a classified ad for ..

First Unitarian Universalist Church of Second Life

Hmm seems you have seen some groups

If you look at the Info of a group you can find memebers names then IM a group owner/leader and get an invite?

An Open registration group might be an issue with griefers sadly

Hi Celest welcome to SL...

Torley Linden does great tutorials for all sorts of practical skills in SL, especially the ones on how to use the interface and tweak settings, so that might help with your computer speed too.

Some objects like chairs can be sat on properly because they have scripts in them for sitting and making your avatar sit down. Lots of objects like fences, cars, houses can be sat on but you will just perch because there isn't any special scripting in them.

Don't worry that you don't know what you are doing.. the learning curve here is very steep at first, but it gets muchhhhh easier in about two or three weeks, and I assure you it's worth the journey... If it was simple, it would get boring very soon.

Check out the thread called "Top five tips for the newly born" at the top of this forum... its really useful.

Best of luck

There are a few Muslim groups out there, and some Jewish ones as well. Some quite lovely mosques and synagogues populate the grid. :)

I don't know if you're looking for anything specific, but there are several Hindi temples I frequent. Send me an IM inworld and when I get home (or log in today on ajaxlife or something) I'll give you a couple of landmarks to them.

There are groups for everything in SL. Fans of particular stores, clubs, special interest groups of all sorts.

A group is just that...two or more avatars with something in common and L$100 to pay the group formation fee. When you join a group, you will get a title that appears over your head when you have that group active (you can belong to up to 25 groups). You also are able to receive group notices, and receive and post messages to the group members as a whole.

Groups MAY own land (or they might not), which is why some of them have a location that you can teleport to.

Welcome to SL.
Yeah sometimes even if you been around while there is problems I have probably on low end of graphic card requirements a 6200 nvidea, 768 ram, 2333 ghz computer and I have issues.
Not every one here can afford the top notch graphic cards. My friend who makes absolutely beautiful flexible dresses and hand drawn clothing designs uses nvidea 4400.
I have friends who were on dial up used below what recommended even I have so I understand how it can be.
It is possible but its bit difficult at times.
With the newer stuff and changes I am struggling with what I have at times still.
Sometimes things just fail teleports, search doesn't work, you go to event no one is there.
That just SL, sorry about it but don't get discouraged, welcome.
As far as buying money I recommend you only do it on the official Second Life site via the account page.
There are groups too I belong too for some reason the land doesn't show up in the group land information.
I haven't figure out that one and I have been around for long time.
Groups often are a joke very few are really meant for anything other then land holding.
Forum Cartell group and few others are only few I know that actually have activities and social exchanges but some of busier ones the constant messages in world through chat window and group messages do get to be bit too much.
Then others its just like dead no one is there ever.
A lot of Buddhist groups for example nothing ever happens, its great if you want to belong to group that identifies a believe but as far as people to talk to in world who share those believes I haven't in all my years here found much dialog or communication within majority of those groups.
There are events for some religious activities i.e bible studies, discussion groups, etc.
Try search events/ discussion or support groups

You know Ed, you might just need more ram. I played for my first 6 weeks on a 5500 nvidea and 512 memory; I upgraded to 2 gigs and the improvement was amazing. I bet just getting to 1 gig would help a lot. I've since upgraded the card too, but the ram was a LOT cheaper.

Celeste, I tried to PM you but it said you didn't have that function turned on.

I am active in a SL church that is accepting of any and all...believers or not as well as several faith-based groups. You can check my profile and if you have any questions or need more info, please feel free to IM me or send a PM to me here :)
