Have you tried the Seach bar located on the top-right corner? =) Search for something that you're interested it.

Well, you must be on 'Orientation Island'...it's where we all start out. If you are unfamiliar with Second Life--as it seems you are--I recommend you walk around and follow the tutorials that are setup in stations around the island.
Once you become familiar with the user-interface, possibilities and potential of Second Life via the tutorials...you can then move on to the main grid (world). You can bypass Orientation Island (Oi), but I don't recommend you do. Once there, you can use the 'Search' feature, and search for anything you like. There is no end to the sights and events going on... Have fun, and good luck. IM me inworld if you have more questions. _____________________

Hi Niveyah - are you still on Orientation Island? It would be an island with 4 parts. On looks like a castle, the other is sort of a hill that you climb to a volcano, the third is a city with a bunch of stuff to drive and the 4th is sort of open with maps and some displays.
That's where everyone starts. it's a good idea to do the tutorials there just so you get a feel for how the basic controls work. Once you are done there, you can go to that central area and click on the sign that says "Help Island" It will open up a teleport window on your screen. Hit "teleport" and it will send you to Help Island. You can play there for a while if you still want to get more comfortable, try some basic building, check out the freebie store, etc. Or you can teleport from there straight to the mainland. Search will start to work for you there. It doesn't work for you on Orientation Island because they want you to do the tutorials first. Welcome to the forums and feel free to ask if you have any questions, or you can IM me in-world. Search works to find people, I think. Edit: Bah! Bigwig beat me to it. _____________________

thank you guys!
. So what I should do is go to the search bar, and type in a keyword of something I want to go to? So what is this SURL thing? lol, I'm sorry about this. Michael, I actually walked through the island and well, where exactly are the tutorials, it's hard enough to walk and fly through the island and read the small writing lol |

But please at least finish the tutorials. Really!
Knowing how to chat, fly, go into appearance and use the Search is kinda important in SL. Plus if you know how to do those things you can then ask the really tough questions like “how do I get this box of my head?” /me stops before getting cynical ![]() _____________________

Don't leave til you have a grasp on the basics! Believe me- much better to learn there. slow down, take your time- SL isn't going anywhere.

Each section of the island is a tutorial. The castle teaches you to edit appearance, the hill climb to the volcano teaches you chat, etc. _____________________

Trout - I'm nowhere near OI.. So I'm not too sure how you got my name. I've been off there for a very long time..
Niveyah, however, is =p Niveyah - Yes, Type in anything. If you know a club name or the name of something you want to see, type that in. Or search for 'freebies', just pop around for a bit and you'll find loads of exciting things! You can also zoom in with the wheel on your mouse, or by going View - Camera controls, and using the zoom feature in the middle =) |

And also, not to sound crass, but it sounds like you're already irritated and bored with Second Life...it may not be something for you. When I first discovered Second Life, even Orientation Island excited the hell out of me. I willing ran around going through the tutorials. If you can't find the tutorials, and are annoyed at reading signs...well, SL may not be for you. Sorry. *shrugs* _____________________

You can also zoom in with the wheel on your mouse, or by going View - Camera controls, and using the zoom feature in the middle =) Sorry to use you as an example Malina, but... This is a perfect example of why you should go through the tutorials. Malina is trying to explain to you how to zoom...incorrectly taught in my eyes. You should learn how to Alt-Zoom from the get go (which the tutorials cover right away). It is by far the most effective way to zoom in on objects, and although it takes a minute to get used to, will become invaluable to you in the future. Teaching someone to zoom with mouse wheel or camera controls is WAY counter-productive and not nearly as accurate. Sorry. _____________________

All these questions are answered at Orientation Island. Make sure you hit up all the stations, and follow the step-by-step instructions. _____________________

In all seriousness, the last time I looked, Search was not working right on OI. I had to have someone TP me off because I couldn't do it the normal way, so I don't think this advice from everyone about using search is going to help her. _____________________

Ok I'm going back into SL after hearing about these tutorials. Thank you once again, silly question yet again but how would I IM somebody? If they are nearby and you can see them, right click on them and select Message. If they are not there, look them up in Search/people and double click on their name in Search. That brings up their profile, and you can IM them from that. _____________________

OK...In no particular order:
1. Orientation Island may seem boring, but the information you pick up there can really speed up getting comfortable with the Second Life user interface. At least learn to find your way around the Communicate window, the Search window, your Inventory, and the Appearance menu. 2. To send an IM, right click an avatar and select Send IM. If they're not physically present, find their profile in Search/People and click the Send IM button. 3. To move your camera point of view, hold down the ALT key and the left mouse button. Then swing your mouse around to pan your camera. Holding CTRL+ALT and doing this will tilt your camera up and down. 4. Click the Help Island sign in the central plaza of Orientation Island for a landmark to Help Island. Click the teleport button in the landmark window to go there. On Help Island, practice "buying" things in the Freebie Store, and opening boxed items (drag the item from your inventory onto the ground, right click, select Open, drag the contents into your inventory). 5. While you're there, try right clicking the ground and select Create. Rez a plywood cube and play around with the Edit menu a little bit. 6. When you're tired of that, head for the huge green EXIT sign on Help Island. You will be teleported to a random Welcome Area. It's likely to be crowded and noisy. Use the Search window to find someplace of interest to teleport to, and get away from the crowd. Search this forum for some "favorite places". A couple I recommend are GQ Start and NCI and The Shelter for newcomers. Or come on by The Forum Cartel Hangout to meet us in world. _____________________

This person might have wound up directly on Help Island from creating their account - there is a trial where new residents are being shuttled directly to Help Islands 201, 202, and 210 - from Wednesday to (perhaps) the end of the week. If so, they might not be seeing what we think they're seeing (no telling, of course)
