I share my land with my partner, who is relatively new to sl. When she is at our home alone, everything works fine ... she moves about, plants flowers, watches the ducks! As soon as I arrive ... her av stops working correctly ... crashes ... can't move ... when we try to use a dance (or any other animation!) her screen shows her under the terraforming at sea level or standing around motionless, while on my screen we are dancing (etc).
I suspect it's her graphics card that is not up to the job. She is running a Dell Dimension e 521 with Vista, Athlon 64x2 Duel core 5000+ processor (which I think is 2.6 ghz)., and an ATI Radeon x1300pro graphics card. I've looked on the System requirements page ... and see that this card is not listed ... but want to be sure this is the problem before I suggest she spends good money on upgrading the card.
Any help gratefully accepted !!!!!

Does she have those problems in the presence of any other resident? Have you tried putting on a generic avatar or wearing your av attachments (not clothing or skin, objects)incrementally to see what might be overloading her system?

What Snark said...try stripping everything from your avatar 1st and add it all one by one to see if its an attachment of yours thats doing this before going to the trouble and expense of getting anew card. I had a resident who kept shooting 500mts into the air apparently for no reason. we eventually tracked the problem down to his friends 'trouser bump'...everytime his friend got near him off he shot...we only found this by stripping and adding a piece back at a time.

You could also try reducing the strain on your graphics card.
Reduce the draw distance in the preferences (View menu, preferences, graphics tab). Get up the client menu (CTL ALT D on a MS Windows client) and select Rendering/Types then uncheck anything you don't need, e.g., alpha, clouds, particles etc.

... have created a new account and met her as a total newbie ... no attachments ... still the same, and her draw distance is alreadt set at 64 !!!
Have discovered that we can dance, but only if she sits on the dance ball first ... and I sit more than 10 seconds later.
Please keep the suggestions coming.

Have you tried stripping her down and adding things to see if she has a weird attachment? Also, you didn't answer whether she has the problem in front of other people. She has it with you and your alts, but how about others? Make SURE you have all attachments removed from both of you.
It could be her video card, I guess, but you should be able to overcome that by monkeying with the grahics settings. It sounds weird for a graphics card problem, though.
Have both of you cleared cache and relogged?

You might also want to make sure you and her have the latest gfx card drivers for her PC. Make sure you have enough RAM.. i would suggest more than 2 MB... other than that do what everyone else said...

That must have been one hell of a bump to get him that excited....or frightened.

Latest Update

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions.
I have made us a skybox at 350 meters ... with just a few pieces of furniture and a couple of dances ... and WOOHOO ... we work fine there. As soon as we drop down to our group owned land (I have an 8192 where I have built a house with functioning kitchen, dining table, bed, bath, shower, waterfall. stream with ponds and animated fish and waterfowl ..... not bragging ... just explaining that this is obviously significant!) she virtually seizes up, irrespective of whether she is with my mormal av or the one I created as a test which is the basic "boy next doot" with no additions.
She has contacted her isp and arranged to increase her broadband upload rate. This should take effect today ... I'll let you know the effect.

Sounds like you solved the problem with the skybox, something in the build is causing the problem. With all the "functional" items you have one of them could be the source. I had an online sensor that would boot me out of my sim. Caroline: I nearly spilled my breakfast when I read your post. Talk about a premature - - ah well nevermind.. "CX"

Just so you know, Ivebin, You didn't have to create a whole new alt just to get back to "basics." Press Ctrl-Alt-D to get the Client menu up. Then go to Character/Character Tests/Test Male to go back to the prototype avatar.

Do you share a network connection? I'm not sure how that might cause the problem, but who knows?

kk, could be something in world however, her puter puts mine to shame lol and I get along very well most of the time. Things I do; de-frag the hard drive (at least once a month, if never done will take some time the first time) run a registry cleaner (try once/week) make sure to clear machine of any viruses or data miners(Trend Housecall online scanner, Lavasoft adware, spybot, etc) Clear the network cache, temp internet files & cookies before each log in. (sometimes if inworld long enough you will need to clear the cache & relog) If on a multiple puter network use a custom port (like 13001 or above and ensure if more than two puters, no two use the same port. Make sure using all updated drivers for video card sound card (at secondlife.com support page you can find links to these for specific cards) Latest direct x quiktime java I also overclock a tad. I know this is a hassle but till your puters are as clean as they can be it makes it difficult to identify what in world may be causing the issues. There are probably a couple things I may be forgetting but this would be a good start . After all that you might find it was sl all along but you will have a cleaner puter
