Things will not link?

If a cube gets beyond a few meters from another cube, a message pops up saying they are too far away to be linked.

Is this because of the current grid borkage? I can't imagine why that would break linking, but it apparently is?

Link rules changed for Havok 4. http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Linkability_Rules

Should the two prims be able to link under those rules?

Well yeah, they are only like under five meters away from each other.

And how big are they?

Just regular prims. .5 x .5 x .5. Or ANYTHING. It's just I've never seen this get borked before, and was wondering if the current asset messes could affect this, too.

I'm gonna go try again.

This sounds completely insane, but: Have you tried relogging? I know this makes no sense whatsoever, but for the past few viewer releases--since before H4 was even on the sims--I'll sometimes find myself in a state where practically nothing will link. I'll relog and--I swear--the exact same thing will link. I don't understand how such a thing could be possible, but... well, it would be interesting if anybody else sees this happen.

Okay, relogging didn't help. I also tried linking in a sandbox, that didn't work. Would somebody else try linking something and see if they have this issue?

coco

P.S. They will link if close enough together. Just make two prims, try linking them at about 2-3 meters, then at about 6 meters.

From: Wiki
max_link_span = minimum( 3 * (radius_A + radius_B) + 2, 54)

So with a .5m _sphere_, the max link distance should be 3.5m. Testing this out, I can get them 3.732m apart before they refuse to link.

The diameter of a sphere bounding a .5m box, going visually, is about .875m which makes the max link distance about 3.75m. Testing this out, I an only get to 3.732 which isn't too far off from my bounding sphere guess.

It sounds to me like things are working as-adverised. If you want to link two cubes that are 5m apart, make them big enough to just fit totally inside a 1m diameter sphere.

Works at 3 meters but says too far apart at 6.

Yep, same for me CoCo.

I just tried an experiment with two 0.5x0.5x0.5 cubes. They will link when the centers are 3.72m away but not 3.73m away. That seems like a pretty short distance to not allow linking. I'm too lazy to look up what the rules say, but there's another data point for you to work with.

And two 5x5x5 cubes will link with centers 19m apart but not 20m.

So I discovered!

Mystery solved - has nothing to do with current grid troubles!

It's amazing to me that I have been building all this time and yet never tried to link two prims that size that far apart.

Confounding the whole thing is the fact that I had linked those teleporters just last week in another house. Yet they would not link in this house!

So I found a friend who happened to know what you know, and he explained it to me. The house I was putting the teleporters in had ceilings just high enough over the other house so that that limitation kicked in.

That, plus the grid borkiness, had me thinking it was another bug.

Thanks for the help, anyhow! As Emily Litella said, "Never mind..."

As much as I like taking credit for things, Viktoria called it before I did (though I had read the wiki article before tonight so I still get partial credit)..

:)
