Noob question I guess but I have always wondered, who are these people who hang around the terminals at the SLExchange HQ? "Why don't you ask them?" you may be thinking. Well I don't know if they are beggars or what-not and I usually just pop in to do a quick transaction on a terminal.
Just wondering.

Maybe they're other people who have just popped in to use a terminal?

I know what you mean, but I don't think there's any scamming going on. I've gone to the terminal, used it, then stood there for like half an hour.
1- I was looking through search for something in particular (this can take a long time).
2- I got up (RL) to use the washroom and get something to eat, (yes, I washed my hands).
3- I had a conversation through IM with a newbie who seemed lost.
I suppose because we're dealing with (our) money, anyone hanging around can seem a little suspicious.

It could also be new sign-ups to SLX who are trying to verify their account. You have to say "verify xyz" or whatever password you're given.
And if they've forgotten that, they may have to go to the SLX website, check the FAQ, check their e-mail to see what the password was - this can take quite a long time.
First time I signed up to SLX I stood in front of a terminal in-world totally clueless, and must have spent half an hour there trying to work out what I was supposed to do.

For the paranoid and conspiracy enthusiasts: Maybe they are bots, designed to harvest the names and UUIDs of SLX clients. Perhaps sent by a competitor....

If you hear...
"Spare some change for change"
"spit on me for a dollar"
"my cat is hungry"
They are begging. Don't give beggars in SL money. Also I like cats.

I've appeared to do this it seems. I went to a terminal, and someone else showed up just after I was ready to start a few transactions. So I figured I'd wait until they were done, pulled up the map and started looking if others were available with nobody around, I probably appeared to be standing there suspiciously since we didn't chat or IM. For security using terminals anywhere, you can use ctrl-alt-t to be sure no transparent prims have put in the way, and verify the correct name is on any payment box.

Sometimes I accumulate a fair amount of L$ and deposit them in my SLExchange account to cash out on its currency exchange. I'm extremely cautious about this though because like purchases, deposits can go wrong, expecially if there is something wrong with SL that day which is not infrequent so I deposit in small amounts, each time waiting for confirmation both from my SLExchange account and my SL transaction account. This can take a few minutes for each deposit and if I am depositing for example L$50,000 to L$100,000 in L$5,000 increments it can take a bit of time. It's possible that at least some of these people you see are doing the same thing.

SLX has remote deposit boxes you can rez in world so that deposits can be done over the web. That might be a good alternative if you're wary of the kiosks and have somewhere to keep the prim.

I thought the same thing because there was one person standing near every terminal. I left and came back about an hour later and they were still there so I just figured they were trying to harvest email address or something (don't even know if it shows up to them or not)

I've never been to SLX HQ, but I have a terminal in one of my sims, and the only time I us it is when I need to buy something from SLexchange. That takes me over into Internet Explorer for a while, so I would effectively be standing there like a bot while I'm shopping.
