Ok, probably somebody has asked this before, but I'll ask anyway, maybe somebody can answer me.

I own a sim, not in mainland, and would like to have a snow texture on the ground. Somebody knows how can I do that?

I'm blonde, please if you know, make the explanations as simple as possible LOL

Thanks :)

Hi Mily,

There's already a snow texture in your Library folder. Just type "Snow" into the Search bar in your inventory window.

Oh! and what Stephen says! :o

Well, assuming you have a snow texture you want to use, go into the World Menu and select Region/Estate.

Then go to the Ground Textures tab. You'll see 4 textures there (some may or may not be the same), along with 4 sets of 2 heights. Each set tells SL where to start drawing each of the textures for each of the directions SW, NW, SE and NE - they're blended together inbetween those. If they're set the same for each direction, then it will be constant across the sim.

The Low height is the height, below which the first texture will be used. The High height is the one above which the 4th texture will be used. In between those, the middle 2 will be progressively blended in as the sim gets higher. So you can just have snow on the high parts, for example, by only applying the snow texture to the last box.

For terrain - the bigger the better. Dimensions of 512x512 is ideal.

NO. Bigger is NOT better. 512 x 512 is what you want. Any other size just gets resized by SL, and you lose the extra detail.

The texture also needs to be seamlessly tilable in both directions. It will get applied with one repeat per 4 meters in the X and Y dimensions, streached as needed vertically.

Mily,

Get a weather machine for your sim too, so you can have big fluffy flakes falling.

Mmmm! Break out the cocoa!

Is there a way to selectively color the terrain by land parcel on estate land? I'd love to be able to run 4 meter wide parcels, terraformed up slightly, and paint a sidewalk texture on it.

Mily, I'm glad you got your snow sim going. My 1st land ownership in SL was a snowy plot in the old continent, and I loved it! It made the house feel warm and inviting.

No, the whole sim shares the same 4 textures. What I do in my rental sims is bury prims textured like a footpath *just* under the surface of the terrain, then manually lower the land slightly with the small brush, making it all wavy and organic.

Thanks, Stephen, that's how I do my footpaths, too. It looks great, actually better than what I was proposing here. But it would save a ton of prims if we could just texture.

Here is what the sim terrain adjustment menu looks like. To change textures, just double click on the texture and that will bring up the texture chooser.

Got a snow storm in the sim, its sooooooo beautiful, the paths covered temporarily by snow and everything totally white.
Placed some snowed trees around and some Xmas trees near landing point.
I feel Christmas in the air.

There's some coffee in there, everybody's welcomed to come and have a cup in front of the fireplace in the Gingerbread house.

/me smiles

if you need a santa or anything, send an IM to Santaclaus Nitely. He's free, just doing it for the joy it can bring ^^

Also, if anyone has any good people who deserve a nice little gift (Child av's preffered but not exclusive) send him an IM with the name and gift wanted (Just tell him what it is, and he'll get it if it doesn't cost too much ^^)

All free for the season ^^
