So, the word of the year for Oxford English Dictionary is "Unfriend"
I approve. It's new and vibrant with a pepper sprinkle of Shakespeare even. He invented "disremember" remember?
What do you think of Oxford's choice?

I find the Oxford Dictionary of Earth Sciences more useful personally, but all of their books are first rate - the ones such as I've happened to glance through, anyway.

I tried reading one of those once.....

The plot sucked but the author had a huge vocabulary. :)

Actually, Jig, I think that you'll find it's some coarse American upstart dictionary. Think of it as the equivalent of the boy adopted by wolves.

Elsewhere I have expressed my preference for defriend, and received support for the view. Apart from anything else, what would this neologism make "unfriendly" mean?

Using "unfriendly" with that in mind I know many people of the unfriendly sort. Every time their poor little feelings get hurt out comes that little personality quirk. I have four calling cards from the same person and I'm not even the one that torqued them off. Its became a parlay of sorts in my circles. We place under/over bets on how long it will take before we all told in dramatic fashion that ********** is no longer on our friends list.

This all sounds like a combination of Toni Braxton and Miley Cyrus's dad . . .

Pep (That would be one hell of a mashup, eh?)

I must say the word "unfriend" feels quite creepy. Rather like Newspeak. What's next? Ungood? Just a little too 1984 for me.

That's wicked!

But "unfriend" is not unfriendly, it's jus' being careful.

1984 was a *very* mixed year! Here are the UK number ones:

Paul McCartney Pipes Of Peace
Frankie Goes To Hollywood Relax
Nena 99 Red Balloons
Lionel Richie Hello
Duran Duran The Reflex
Wham! Wake Me Up Before You Go Go
Frankie Goes To Hollywood Two Tribes
George Michael Careless Whisper
Stevie Wonder I Just Called To Say I Love You
Wham! Freedom
Chaka Khan I Feel For You
Jim Diamond I Should Have Known Better
Frankie Goes To Hollywood The Power Of Love
Band Aid Do They Know It's Christmas

Pep (On the upside, three Frankies and a Band Aid, on the down side, two Whams and a Nena.)

Wrong 1984. :P I was talking about Orwellian 1984, not the Me decade. lol

I have many fond memories of the 80's too, since I did the bulk of my growing up in the late 70's through the 80's (I also just happen to be the same age as Phillip Rosedale).

Nah! "Be" goes with "un".

As in beloved and unloved. So you get, befriended and unfriended. In your version, we would have beloved and deloved!

I once told Billy Ray to bring me a beer one time. It was about a month before he got famous and he was playing a small club in my town. I didn't know who the hell he was, just that he was bothering me when I was trying to talk to a girl. So I told him to make himself useful and go get me a beer.

Except that Oxford University is in the UK, which means you're wrong.
