Beware hosting companies :(

Hi, You may remember some weeks ago trying to find a hoster to store my vids and send streaming mp4 to second life.

I tried out a company called "servage" and sent them a pre-sign up question, cani store urls and stream mp4s? they said yes straight away.

Today I asked how i do this and what is a ftp and a subdomain, and i just got a reply that i cant store or stream mp4s because they are copywrite! There for I asked for £30 i paid a few days ago to be refunded, and they are refusing because they said read conditions, this makes no sense at all, because they sent me an email (saved) saying that streaming my vids would be ok. The only mp4 i got uploaded was a pearl and dean trailer for my cinema, but didnt know where it went to stream it... All my vids i want to stream are from sapphic erotica/ liitle mutt /and lesbobabes and abby winters, they arent for commercial use just 4 watching on my widescreen, is this going to be a problem with any hosting site i want to stream adult material into my SL home?

So im now £30 lost down drain

If the trailers and films in question are copyrighted, and I'm sure they are, then you are not going to have any luck at all finding a "legitimate" provider to host them for you. Due diligence is in order here on your part. You need to understand, before handing over your credit card, that what you're doing is likely illegal, and likely to cause problems for both you and your prospective host provider.

Can't mp4s be played on a computer? I'm sure they can, so why the need to have them on the web?

So that he can stream them via quicktime onto a parcel and play them in a theater-like setting in-world. For that, they need to be hosted on a publicly accessible server, and preferably streamed.

the format known as mp4 is not exclusive to commercial content so if they are saying that you cant put *any* mp4 content there then they are wrong.

Since you asked prior to sign up and they confirmed suitability, if they are a uk host then seek redress under supply of goods and services to consumers regulations but you might not want to mention the copyright porn but rather your family home movies unless they too are porn?

they didn't explain the condition, and you didn't ask.... about whether it had to be YOUR original content, or someone else's copywright.

not sure who'd bad that is, both i guess. bummer dude. but it's only £30. don't go out to dinner this weekend, just eat beans and rice, and you'll be all caught up!

For some reason, taking the effort of streaming porn into SL of all places just to jer... ehhhr, just for your own private enjoyment strikes me as a little weird.

Then again, almost all of the people I met in SL are weirdos.

i'm sure it was meant to be for sale. his investment didn't get off, as it were.

having let off my anger, Im pleased to say that Servage gave me a full refund of the £31, it was not a case of copywrite, they just misunderstood about streaming mp4s, which i asked about BEFORE signing up. They dont even allow storage facilites! funny company! Anyway, nothing lost, nothing gained, but more experience in the complexities of SL.

Matter closed, unless some one really knows a host i can use, if not i will have to drop out of media part of sl and just use my jpeg slide shows i make that does work in freeview widescreens.

For future avoidance of problems, burn your mp4s to a CD, them rip them as mp3. Saves a lot of headaches with some providers.

hi ghosty, the first thing THEY said when I complained that you agreed to me streaming mp4s, was, Oh we dont allow mp3s either, the other matter is that this company made it clear in there FAQs that using 18+adult material was acceptable as long as it was legal. ie no rape/ kiddie/ or whatever....so if i made my own naughty film , say with some bi friends of mine, that would be my content anyway. No, they just dont make it clear at all about media streaming, it was not mentioned in the package, and thats why i asked them before sign up,
that u support the above, i could not have made it any plainer...they said yes, which was incorrect hence the refund..

Read again, a question about why you'd take 1st generation media to subsequently re-stream to watch on a low res inworld screen but that was just a misunderstanding.

Depending on your bandwidth upstream and ISP data limits, why not set up something like Real Server basic (it's called something else now) and stream direct from home. You'll be limited by upstream bandwidth as to how many people you can stream to but if you keep the stream modest it'll work.

one site i now manage used to be on servage, they suck

their systems crashed, screwing our database, which in turn caused some weird loop, many times a day

they locked us out, it took 3 weeks of us *kindly and patiently* explaining that it was their crappy servers that caused the problem and we cant fix their servers

then when we left we were unable to back up our databases, 15.7mb of data would download maby 12mb one time, maby 199k the next, sometimes 40mb, then they banned us for "hacking"

this took us 2 weeks of us *kindly and patiently* explaining that it was their crappy servers and after a few more *friendly* phone calls we were magically able to download our database with no issues

moved over to hostmonster.com (which does not allow adult material btw) where the site has been running error free for about 9 months now, where as on servage we were lucky to get 6 hours before being down for a week

i also have my personal server with hostmonster (bout a year and a half now), great host, super fast... but doesnt help you any since they do not allow adult material

Sassy point taken, but I have a lot of friends who are alternative lifestyles RL like me, but many of them remain in the closet, and even some hetero friends turn of there RL dvd player if a partner comes home, frightened there going be called perves for watching a bit of P***** L*****! So, most have comps in corners lol where there not disturbed, and they wait patiently for me to give em what they want, lesbo/shemale movies lol.

Sorry to here of your experiences with part of the servage company! It is getting harder day by day to get adult stuff onto a website, unless its a proper commercial one and that costs!!! Theres a lot of hosting companies out there that are after yuor money and little else!!

Someone told me to host my own vids, and stream them, how on earth do u do that!!??

Going back to copywrite, I went to a dvd store inworld and found may lesbo ones, some I have some of the titles myself, so how do they manage to get them to sell or hire out, surely thats more of a copywrite theft, than simply streaming it into my own sl private cinema/home.....dont make sense at all...are these stores buying a copywrite to be able to sell/hire these main stream adult vids to the general sl public?
