I have just switched to a new PC with Vista H.premium (only moving on from XP somewhat earlier than i had intended due my old machine being a pain...). Vista works fine except with SL (it would would'nt it!!) I get a variety of crashes ranging from the machine rebooting itself to the windows desktop manager closing because it a has ahs a problem (sometimes stating that this is due to the Nvidia driver). Not to mention the dread blue screen of death.. Having looked through a couple of Nvidia related forums thiese symptoms are not usual and for Sl and other games suchsa as warcraft. general opion is that overall nvidia driver arent quite advanced enough yet .. (ATI users i gather have ebevn worse problems ....) There is also a recent MS update which amongst other thisngs is meant to help fix problems with Nvidia cards - KB938164 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938194I have this downloaded but it hasnt made any difference. However some people who have posted on this forum seem to been successfully using sl with a combination of Vista and Nvidia cards so I would be interest to know what combination of Nvidia based card and respective driver versions seem to be okay particuarly where also running an intel duo core processor. My set up is Vista 32 bit Home prem' Intel duo 6570 with 2meg ram and a 7600GT card with diriver version 162.22 Thanks in advance for any words or wisdom. Billy

I am one that is running Vista with SL with maybe 1-2 crashes a week which is about as good as SL has evern been for me on XP or vista. Some builds are better than others but the current 1.8.X line has been pretty stable. Using an 8800GTX which has a seperate driver line though... I've noticed that some settings for the video card are less stable with SL than others. Adjust your GPU settings and make sure that under the 3d settings you have "Extension Limit" set to OFF and Threaded Optimization OFF. nvidia's Open GL driver can be run multi threaded and it does boost your SL frame rate nicely but it also seems to crash more often. Other than that check the rest of your settings and try turning one of them off or down each day to see if it gets any better. You'll probably find that one setting is crashy, you can then turn it off only for SL oly under the "Program settings" tab of the nvidia control panel. Farallon OH! ANd if you are getting the "desktop has restared because of a video driver rtimeout" then install this patch from Microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=ae2f819d-c33d-48db-a7e3-62eef7c1f7c2&DisplayLang=en

I have an Alienware w/ Vista and I can't remember the last time I've crashed... I did have a few crashing problems at first, but after updating all my drivers, I have no problems at all...
CPU: Intel Core 2 Series Processor (2133 MHz) Memory: 2046 MB OS Version: Microsoft Windows Vista (Build 6000) Graphics Card Vendor: NVIDIA Corporation Graphics Card: GeForce 8800 GTX/PCI/SSE2

I haven't been having noticeable problems with Vista either. I'm running a dual core 6300 with 2 GB, and only a nVidia 7300 video card and it runs fine. It does crash sometimes, but not frequently. I'm using 158.24, so a bit older than yours -- but that's more from lack of updating than by design. Since you seem to be having problems with a more recent driver, I think I will hold off updating ...

Many thansk Farallon and Sensual.
One or two crashed a week would suit me fine!!!
My GPU setting were Extension Limit set to 'OFF' and Threaded Optimization 'Auto', so have tried setting the latter to 'off' and will play with the settings as suggested hopefully getting a workable combination.
Much appreciated.

This is a dumb question, but where does one access those GPU settings? I've been getting a lot of blue screens of death with Vista and I'm trying to figure out why.

I run Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT. I have tried downloading the suggested update, but cannot even start up SL when I do that as the video card drivers are out of date? Asus blame SL, SL blames Asus, oh well........

One thing I have noticed with Vista and my 8800GTX is that if I run full screen vs. windowed it is far more stable. Haven't had any crashes for a very long time.
